Chaotic, Crazy, That's What We're Used to is the third episode of The Amazing Race 37.

Story[]

Jonathan & Ana open their first clue in Osaka Castle Park and find they must travel by bullet train to Kyoto and locate the Shimogamo Shrine. The clue also warns teams that an Express Pass will be available on the leg. Jonathan & Ana feel more comfortable after winning the last leg and want to get the Express Pass to use in a hot country since Jonathan is sensitive to the heat. Scott & Lori depart 20 minutes later and go "slogging" (slow jogging) to their taxi.

Alyssa & Josiah leave a few minutes later, with Josiah excited to go to Kyoto since his brother's also been there. Carson & Jack are excited to take the bullet train, with it being on their bucket list. They hope to get the Express Pass since they have a slight target on their backs. Melinda & Erika are the next to leave, with Melinda having some issues with her quad. Courtney & Jasmin believe their backgrounds as nurses in intensive and emergency care will allow them to be one of the more adaptable teams, even if they aren't the fastest. Pops & Jeff and Bernie & Carrigain leave minutes after them.

Jonathan & Ana catch the first bullet train at 9:33 A.M., and Scott & Lori rush and join them in the nick of time. Carson & Jack and Alyssa & Josiah get the second train leaving at 9:48 A.M. and are impressed with the train's speed. The first train arrives in Kyoto and both married couples rush outside to grab a taxi, with Jonathan & Ana commenting on the city's beautiful and historical visuals. The second train arrives shortly afterwards, and the two teams say they'll see each other at the next stop.

Courtney & Jasmin have some confusion over where to get the tickets at the station. Pops convinces a couple to allow him and Jeff to cut in front of them, allowing them to get the third train that departs at 10:06 A.M. After learning from a local where the line is, Courtney & Jasmin get tickets to the fourth train that leaves at 10:30 A.M., with Melinda & Erika also joining them after their taxi fell behind the others. Bernie & Carrigain and Brett & Mark get on the fifth train at 10:39 A.M., with Nick & Mike barely able to join them. Meanwhile, Scott & Lori are the first team to find the next clue at the Shimogamo Shrine. This Route Info instructs teams to search the shrine grounds for a marked vendor, then buy a sheet of fortune paper called o-mikuji and dip it into water to reveal the name of their next destination, Shiramine Shrine. Both married parents buy the sheet from the vendor and uncover their destination quickly through the water, and ask some locals for directions towards it. Jonathan & Ana try to get a taxi and see Carson & Jack arrive, convincing the gamers to let their taxi driver stay as they get their next clue. The next two teams get their sheets from the vendor, with all four leaving closely at the same time since the first two needed to get another cab.

Han & Holden are the last to leave Osaka. The two know that while the season is full of twists that could help them, they have to force their own luck sometimes, as Holden finds a hotel to get them a taxi quickly. Pops & Jeff arrive at Kyoto and get a taxi to go to the next spot. Jonathan & Ana are the first to arrive at the Shiramine Shrine, which features a Roadblock and the Express Pass challenge. One team member must play kemari, a traditional Japanese game involving a group of people kicking a mari ball to each other and keeping it off of the ground. They must choose a group of players and complete five passes of the mari to another player without letting the ball touch the ground. Once they have successfully completed five passes, they would receive their next clue. In addition, teams are given an opportunity to retrieve the Express Pass by being the first team to have both members could complete the task.

Jonathan volunteers to go first, but both want to do it for the Express Pass. The gamers arrive and Carson chooses to do it, though both friends consider going for the Express Pass if they get it done quickly. After getting used to the ball and technique, Jonathan manages to be the first one to complete it. Ana takes over to go for it, but she and Carson have trouble keeping the ball in the air. The fourth train arrives in Osaka, and both female-only teams head to the next stop. Jonathan gets frustrated as Ana continues to struggle, but she ignores it knowing how he operates at this point. The fifth train makes it to Kyoto and the three teams grab their taxis, while Carrigain discusses how proud she is to represent her community on the show. As Pops & Jeff get their fortune paper clue, Scott & Lori make it to the Roadblock, with Scott volunteering for it. Carson successfully completes his five kicks and brings Jack in to go for the Express Pass.

Scott manages to complete his quickly. After Lori learns the other two teams already got theirs done and are going for the Express Pass, the parents decide not to go for it and instead decide to move on to the next task to avoid wasting time and put pressure on the other teams. The next clue instructs teams to take a taxi to Yasaka Kōshin-dō. After both teams continue to struggle and reconsider, Ana successfully completes her half, prompting Jack to quit and the gamers to move onto the next task. Jonathan & Ana win the Express pass and celebrate before moving onto their next clue. Han & Holden depart on the sixth train at 11:18 A.M. Alyssa & Josiah arrive at the Roadblock and learn the Express Pass is taken as Josiah goes for it. Despite Alyssa being a seasoned soccer player and being a better choice for it, Josiah's still able to complete the passes relatively quickly.

Scott & Lori arrive at Yasaka Kōshin-dō, which features a Detour: Fold It or Fling It. Both tasks take place at Kyoto Budo Center. In Fold It, teams must fold a human-sized origami paper crane after following a live demonstration. In Fling It, teams must don ninja outfits, then learn how to use three types of ninja weaponry: hira-shuriken stars, bo-shuriken spikes, and fukiya blowguns. Using only three of each weapon, both team members must land all of their weapons onto a target without missing any shot. Scott & Lori choose Fling It and get a taxi to the Budo Center. Melinda & Erika quickly find their sheet paper clue at the shrine and head back to the taxi, while Courtney & Jasmin have some difficulty finding the vendor. Meanwhile, Pops goes for the Roadblock and has some difficulties adjusting to the mari ball. Carson & Jack and Jonathan & Ana also choose Fling It.

After stumbling a few times, Pops successfully keeps the ball up for five passes. Courtney & Jasmin locate the vendor just as the teams from the fifth train arrive to get their fortune paper clues. As the other three teams keep their taxis or get new ones, the dating nurses still question if the second shrine is close or if they need to take a taxi there, but they take so long that the paper dries and they need to get it wet again to remember the shrine name. As they struggle to get a taxi to stop for them, Han & Holden's train arrives in Kyoto and the siblings rush in a taxi to their shrine.

Scott & Lori arrive at the Budo Center and dress up as ninjas, knowing its what their boys would want to do. They see demonstrations on each of the ninja weaponry, but have some difficulty throwing them. Melinda & Erika arrive at the Roadblock, with Erika taking on her third one in a row. Having played a lot of sports growing up, she's able to get through it easily. Courtney & Jasmin finally get a taxi and head to the Shiramine Shrine. Meanwhile, Alyssa & Josiah also choose Fling It. As Scott & Lori consider switching tasks, Carson & Jack arrive, excited to dress like ninjas after watching anime growing up. As Jonathan & Ana start to dress up, Scott & Lori decide to switch to Fold It, having too much difficulty with the spikes. They watch two children offer a demonstration as they excitedly see how large the paper is they have to work with, with Scott relaying how he made a lot of paper airplanes with his children. Back at the Roadblock, Nick's able to get the mari ball five times on one of his first tries.

Melinda & Erika find the Detour clue and decide to do Fold It. They help Pops & Jeff, who had trouble locating it, find the clue, as the two have a mutual alliance thanks to their parent-child dynamic. The father and son also decide to Fold It. At the Roadblock, Brett succeeds at the kicks easily as Bernie & Carrigain arrive. Carrigain chooses to do it since Bernie did the first two, despite her not playing much sports. At the Roadblock, the gamers and parents still need time to practice, though Carson starts getting used to the spikes. As Alyssa & Josiah arrive, Carson & Jack attempt landing all their weapons perfectly and Jonathan & Ana decide to switch to Fold It. At the performance area, Carson misses his first spike, and the gamers immediately decide to switch tasks. Despite seeing all of the teams switch, Alyssa & Josiah still attempt to complete the ninja task.

As they enter the Fold It task, Carson remembers how he used to fold paper cranes when he was younger. Han & Holden are the last team to get their o-mikuji clue and get another taxi to get to the next clue. Courtney & Jasmin arrive at the Roadblock, with Courtney volunteering. While Courtney and Carrigain struggle with the Roadblock, the brothers find the Detour clue and decide to do Fling It. As the parent child duos arrive at Fold It, Scott & Lori think they have one step wrong and watch the kids' demonstration again. Brett & Mark choose Fold It while Nick & Mike arrive at Fling It and see Alyssa & Josiah still going at it. The couple is conflicted with how difficult the task is and how many other teams are at the other task. At the Roadblock, panic begins to set in for the two female teams as Han & Holden arrive, with Holden crushing the task thanks to playing soccer in high school. The siblings are relieved that they're no longer in last place as they move on to the Detour clue.

Shortly afterwards, Courtney begins to feel discouraged as Carrigain is able to finally complete her passes, but Jasmin roots for her. At the origami challenge, Jonathan & Ana refuse to use the Express Pass to save for a future leg. Erika helps out Jeff with his while continuing to fold her origami with her mother. Scott & Lori are the first team to successfully create their paper crane and have it approved. Their next clue instructs them to head to the Pit Stop: Konkaikōmyō-ji Temple. The parents catch a taxi as the Vegas performers arrive at the origami challenge. Carson & Jack are the next team to get their crane approved, with Jonathan admitting he should have listened to Ana earlier on picking Fold It over Fling It.

At the ninja task, Alyssa & Josiah fail at the performance table five times in a row. As the other teams at the origami challenge try to get the steps in order, Jonathan & Ana get their crane approved. Scott & Lori are the first to find the Pit Stop at Konkaikōmyō-ji Temple, with Carson & Jack joining them seconds later. They are greeted by Phil and a kabuki performer. For arriving in first, Scott & Lori win $5,000. Phil also informs the two teams that there will be a new twist in the next leg called the Driver's Seat, where the first team who arrives at the task determine how much work the other teams will need to do at it. As Han & Holden decide to do Fold It, Courtney continues to struggle at the Roadblock and is frustrated and exhausted.

At the ninja task, after 24 failed attempts, an emotional Alyssa & Josiah decide to swallow their pride and switch to the Fold It task, while Nick & Mike continue to try to make it. At the Fold It task, Brett & Mark start to argue on how they're following instructions, while Alyssa & Josiah are slightly relieved so many teams are still there and there are some behind them. At the Roadblock, after hours of kicking the mari around, Courtney finally completes five passes, with Jasmin complimenting her for not giving up. Courtney breaks down in the taxi, with the task's difficulty reminding her of 2020 back when she paused work to be with her mom, who was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Jonathan & Ana arrive in third at the Pit Stop, happy they have the Express Pass to use in a future leg. Han & Holden arrive at Fold It and are pleasantly surprised to see a lot of teams there, while Josiah's glad the room for error isn't as big as the ninja task. Bernie & Carrigain decide to do Fling It.

After seventeen failed attempts at the ninja tools, Nick & Mike take a moment to meditate, having taken it up for years after Nick was assaulted in 2015 and had his jaw wired shut for months. At the origami task, Melinda & Erika have their cranes approved, with Brett & Mark and Pops & Jeff quickly following suit. The brothers decide to switch Detours after 31 failed attempts at the performance course. As they go inside, Holden informs them of the other two teams behind them. As Bernie & Carrigain don their ninja outfits and attempt the tools, Courtney & Jasmin decide on Fold It. Melinda & Erika are happy to see they improved from last leg and placed fourth, with Brett & Mark and Pops & Jeff joining them as the fifth and sixth teams respectively seconds later. Alyssa & Josiah are the next to get their crane approved, with Josiah vowing to come back one day to complete the ninja course. The two pairs of siblings decide to work together on their cranes so they could beat the other two teams.

As Courtney & Jasmin arrive to the origami challenge, the two pairs of siblings get agitated with folding it correctly. With Bernie & Carrigain still struggling to do the ninja task, they decide to join the others at Fold It, meaning the last four teams will be competing at the same task. The friends attempt to tune out Holden, who is yelling at Han for folding it incorrectly. Nick & Mike chuckle and tell them to calm down. Alyssa & Josiah arrive at the Pit Stop in seventh. Bernie & Carrigain are able to make a crane structure, but their attempt is rejected for having the head, tail, and wings reversed. Nick & Mike correct Han & Holden from one of their first folds that was giving them a lot of trouble. Nick & Mike are the next to get their cranes approved as Courtney & Jasmin take a break to avoid getting too frustrated. Han & Holden get theirs approved shortly after, leaving the two all female teams as the last ones at the task.

Nick & Mike arrive to the temple in eighth place, with Han & Holden making it to ninth and vowing to keep on fighting after learning about the Driver's Seat. Bernie & Carrigain get their origami approved, prompting the nurses to step up their game. As the friends struggle to get a taxi, the nurses first attempt at the crane is rejected. An emotional Bernie & Carrigain make it to the Pit Stop in tenth place and vow not to surrender after giving up a lot to be there.

After figuring out one of their earlier steps was off, Courtney & Jasmin eventually get their crane approved. The two nurses aren't surprised to hear from Phil that they arrived in last and are eliminated. They were still glad they got to be on there, and despite not making it far, they affirm their love for each other and walk towards their next adventure.
