Story[]

At the Arc de Triomphe, in Paris, France, Pat & Brenda are the first to depart at 9:06 pm. Opening their clue, they are told to go to "La Grande Roue", also known as Roue de Paris, and the hours of operation are from 9:00 am to 12:30 am. Pat & Brenda ask a local Parisian where the Roue de Paris is, and are pointed down the street. Pat & Brenda decide to take the subway to get to the Ferris wheel.

I think we're doing great as a team. You know, there's moments of friction there. We've never had to work together under this much pressure. I still think the Guidos are going to be tough all the way through this whole thing.Pat

Joe & Bill are the second team to depart at 11:38 pm. After opening their clue, they wonder where La Grande Roue is located.

Bill is a take-control sort of guy and on a lot of issues, I just let him do it.Joe

After asking a policewoman, Joe & Bill embark the subway to travel to Roue de Paris.

Rob & Brennan are the third to depart at 12:11 am. The best friends realize they will have to wait until the morning to travel to the Ferris wheel. Frank & Margarita are the fourth to depart at 12:18 am.

We decided to form sort of an alliance. Frank & Margarita and the two of us are still together, but Joe & bill decided to go their own way.Rob

After Margarita sees that the Roue de Paris does not close until 12:30 am, she and Frank and Rob & Brennan decide to see if they can still make it before it closes.

I possess certain strengths, such as physical, and she's [Margarita] a lot more cultured than I am. So her culture and my grit, I think made a good combination.Frank

After asking an officer, both teams take a cab to Roue de Paris.

Meanwhile, at Roue de Paris, Pat & Brenda open their next clue, revealing a Detour. Their choices are Tough Climb or Easy Walk. In Tough Climb, teams will have to find and ring Quasimodo's bell found atop the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral to get their next clue. The church is nearby, but the teams will have to climb 297 steps. In Easy Walk, teams will have to find a Foucault Pendulum. It is the easier of the two tasks, but there are two Foucault's Pendulums in Paris: One in the Museum of Arts and Crafts, and the other (the one they need to locate) is inside the Panthéon. Teams must find a cat's statue right next to the correct pendulum to get their next clue. Pat & Brenda decide to perform Easy Walk. Joe & Bill arrive at the Roue de Paris shortly after Pat & Brenda leave. Since both Detour choices do not start until the morning, Joe & Bill decide to walk down Rue Bonaparte, where their former house in Paris is located. Rob & Brennan and Frank & Margarita make it to the Roue de Paris just before it closes. Both teams realize that the Detours are not open for another nine hours, leaving them to think which task they want to perform.

At a local hotel, Joe & Bill ask where Foucault's Pendulum is located. The manager tells them that it is located in the Panthéon. Bill knows where the Panthéon is located, feeling confident on this leg.

Kevin & Drew are the fifth team to depart at 12:27 am. After arriving at the Roue de Paris, which is closing for the night, they ask one of the workers if other Americans were there already. After finding out that there were, the fraternity brothers decide to perform the Fast Forward. For the Fast Forward, they have to find an obscure tea shop called Mariage Frères in Rive Gauche and ask for a specific tea called L'aventurier to receive their the Fast Forward pass.

Paul & Amie are the sixth to depart at 2:18 am. The two begin to bicker over getting to La Grande Roue

The stress, it drives you batty. You're in foreign countries, you don't know where you're going, you don't know where you are. You're on a plane one day-.Amie
We bicker a bunch, but there's been so many other issues and stress factors, that we've been focusing more on that than us bickering. We've been pulling together pretty good.Paul

Nancy & Emily are the seventh to leave, at 2:23 am.

Until this trip, I mean, I knew her as my mom, but not know her as a person.Emily

The mother and daughter leave the Arc de Triomphe to find La Grande Roue.

I mean, she's a person that never wanted me to ride a bike on the regular street. Now she's jumping off cliffs and letting me do it, tooEmily

Dave & Margaretta depart in eighth place, rather than sixth due to both team members going to the observation deck on the Eiffel Tower during the Roadblock in the previous leg, rather than one, at 2:46 am. The two leave the Arc de Triomphe and ask two Parisian women where La Grande Roue is located.

Age is nothing on a piece of paper. Age is something up here. (points to head) The only time I feel my age is when I look in a mirror, and it almost does me in.Margaretta

They ask a few more local Parisians on where La Grande Roue is.

In forty years of living with her [Margaretta], I've seen her tackle all different types of things. When she decides to do something, she does it well.Dave

Lenny & Karyn are the last to depart, at 3:03 am. They decide to hail a cab to Roue de Paris.

I'm a very competitive person, but I don't think I'm doing 100% right now. I can do better. I can do much better.Lenny

Paul & Amie arrive at Roue de Paris, finding that it is closed until 9:00 am. The two decide to wait outside until it opens.

Meanwhile, Kevin & Drew have located Mariage Frères, and camp outside the shop for the night.

Joe & Bill walk down a shop-filled street, revealing they have come to Paris for business in 1984 and 1985, and they have been meaning to come back to the city.

At the Roue de Paris, Lenny & Karyn and Dave & Margaretta have caught up with Paul & Amie. All three teams camp outside the Ferris wheel until it opens.

So we lay down on the ground, and everything was really doing well, until it started to rain.Margaretta

The elderly married couple, the engaged couple, and the dating couple wake up and take cover from the rain, with either umbrellas or sheets.

Joe & Bill, meanwhile, have decided to relax at Cafe de Flore with a cup of tea.

Frank & Margarita have decided to perform Easy Walk, and ask a Parisian man where Foucault's Pendulum is located. He tells them it is at the Panthéon, where they walk to. Rob & Brennan arrive behind them. The two teams begin to talk about the other teams, thinking that Joe & Bill will do Easy Walk, while the other teams will do Tough Climb.

At Musée des Arts et Métiers, Pat & Brenda arrive, thinking that the Foucault's Pendulum they are looking for is in the museum.

In the morning, Dave & Margaretta, Lenny & Karyn, and Paul & Amie are shaking from the freezing rain, attempting to warm themselves up, while waiting for Roue de Paris to open.

We've agreed that we are different in a lot of ways. He [Lenny] knows I'm a worrier. He's more laid back. We've sort of leveled each other out.Karyn
I want our kids to know we can do this, you can do this. I want our grandkids to have the same love of adventure. Get out there and do it.Margaretta

At Mariage Frères, Kevin & Drew complain about their hunger and the rain during the night.

Back at Roue de Paris, Nancy & Emily arrive. Emily asks Dave & Margaretta, Lenny & Karyn, and Paul & Amie if they have been there since two in the morning. Amie tells Emily that they slept out in the rain, while she and Nancy slept in a nearby hotel overnight. At 9:00 am all four teams race into the entrance of Roue de Paris. Nancy & Emily decide to do Tough Climb, unsure where Foucault's Pendulum is. Dave & Margaretta decide on Tough Climb, knowing Notre Dame is easy to get to. Paul & Amie decide on Tough Climb as well.

While waiting for Mariage Frères to open, Drew says Paris is not that special, comparing it to being in SoHo. The manager arrives, opening the shop. They ask for L'aventurier, complimenting its smell, receiving the Fast Forward pass, where they can go to the Pit Stop at the top of Château des Baux in Les Baux-de-Provence. The two take a train to Les Baux-de-Provence.

Joe & Bill take the subway to the Panthéon.

At the Panthéon, Rob & Brennan and Frank & Margarita notice a tariff of 42 francs. Margarita notes that it is the price for student entry.

At Musée des Arts et Métiers, Pat & Brenda search the museum grounds, finding the pendulum, but no cat.

Dave & Margaretta, Lenny & Karyn, Nancy & Emily, and Paul & Amie arrive at Notre Dame.

Joe & Bill arrive at the Panthéon.

What people have a gripe with Team Guido about is they try to hold other people back with deceit and trickery. It's just not a good way to play the game.Rob

Team Guido begins taunting Rob, Brennan, and Frank for not doing the Tough Climb task, despite them being physically strong.

At 10:00 am, Frank & Margarita, Joe & Bill, and Rob & Brennan enter the Panthéon, Dave & Margaretta, Lenny & Karyn, Nancy & Emily, and Paul & Amie enter Notre Dame, and Pat & Brenda enter Musée des Arts et Métiers.

It was the order of who got there. We were obviously the third there, so when we got inside, Brennan and Rob who were first, kept walking and Frank & Margarita walked past.Joe

Inside the Panthéon, Joe & Bill easily find the pendulum, as Rob & Brennan and Frank & Margarita walk past it. Margarita hears the gatekeeper, who was trying to direct them toward the pendulum.

The gal that was manning the gate finally went "Guys, guys!". It was right there. It's not like we tried to sneak in front of them.Joe

The gatekeeper tells teams that only one team is allowed in the main hall at a time, allowing Joe & Bill in first, but not Frank & Margarita. The separated couple and best friends are aggravated that Team Guido is in front of them. Joe & Bill read the next clue instructing them to find the man in the blue suit across from the Hôtel de Ville. Joe & Bill leave the Panthéon, as Frank & Margarita enter the main hall.

Bill and I were still trying to intimidate them. I have certainly taken an attitude where you try to be friendly, but these people are not going to end up being your lifelong friends.Joe

Joe & Bill attempt to hail a taxi to take them to Hôtel de Ville. Frank & Margarita leave the main hall, allowing Rob & Brennan to enter. Rob & Brennan soon leave the Panthéon

At Musée des Arts et Métiers, Pat & Brenda still cannot find the cat inside the museum. A curator overhears the mothers, informing them they are in the wrong place. Pat & Brenda exit the museum.

At Notre Dame, Paul & Amie are taking charge of the pack at the cathedral, followed closely behind by Nancy & Emily, who are being tailed by Lenny & Karyn. Paul & Amie are the first to ring the bell, getting their clue informing them to go to Hôtel de Ville. Dave & Margaretta take their time up the cathedral's steps. Paul & Amie begin their descent down the tower. Nancy & Emily are second to the bell. Nancy rings the cathedral bell, earning her team their next clue. Lenny & Karyn are third to the bell, earning their next clue. Dave & Margaretta are the last to ring the bell and earn their next clue. Paul & Amie are the first team in the Parisian streets, running to find the hotel.

At the Panthéon, Pat & Brenda finally find the correct pendulum, with Pat hugging the cat statue in relief. Pat & Brenda get their next clue telling them to find the man in the blue suit across from the Hôtel de Ville. Pat & Brenda exit the Panthéon and take the subway to Hôtel de Ville.

Joe & Bill decide to walk to the hotel, reasoning that traffic is likely going to slow them down if they take a cab.

Paul & Amie and Lenny & Karyn are the first two teams to find the man in the blue suit, opening their clue, revealing it to be a Roadblock. Nancy & Emily arrive at the site of the Roadblock, while Joe & Bill get lost. Frank & Margarita are the fourth to the site of the Roadblock. While Joe & Bill try to figure out where exactly they are, they bump into Rob & Brennan. The two teams begin to dash toward Hôtel de Ville.

For some reason, we just didn't see the envelopes when we got there.Bill

Rob & Brennan arrive at the hotel fifth, with Joe & Bill arriving shortly after. Dave & Margaretta arrive at the site of the Roadblock.

We were the second-to-last ones to get to the sewer.Bill

For the Roadblock, teams will have to dress up in a sanitary suit and walk through the Paris sewers and get their next clue aboveground at the Place du Châtelet. Dave, Frank, Joe, Karyn, Emily, Paul, and Brennan suit up to enter the sewers.

It was the first time throughout this whole thing that we were that close as a whole group. I mean it was back-to-back-to-back and people were pushing each other to get down into the sewer, like "I'm behind him! No, I'm next! I'm next".Karyn

Paul is the first to enter the Parisian sewer. Karyn enters second. Emily enters third, telling her mom she loves her. Amie, Lenny, and Nancy make their way to Place du Châtelet to wait for their teammate. Frank is the fourth to enter the sewers, while Margarita makes her way to Place du Châtelet. Dave enters the sewers, with Margaretta telling him to be careful. Margaretta leaves to find Place du Châtelet.

Paul is the first to get the clue and resurface. Karyn grabs the next clue, opening it before she resurfaces. The clue tells them to make their way to Château des Baux. Paul & Amie and Lenny & Karyn leave to find the train station. Emily is the third to resurface. She and her mother leave for Château des Baux. Frank resurfaces fourth. Brennan comes aboveground in fifth, while Joe is the sixth to resurface. Joe & Bill take the subway to the train station.

Host Phil Keoghan recaps were teams are currently standing, with Kevin & Drew in first, followed by Paul & Amie, Lenny & Karyn, Nancy & Emily, Frank & Margarita, Rob & Brennan, Joe & Bill, Dave & Margaretta, and Pat & Brenda in last. Kevin & Drew disembark from the train at Les Baux-de-Provence, while Pat & Brenda just spot the man in the blue suit, finding their next clue.

At Gare de Lyon, Lenny & Karyn and Paul & Amie arrive and try to find a train to Les Baux-de-Provence. The two teams congratulate themselves for being the top two. Rob & Brennan arrive at the train station. Frank & Margarita are at the ticket counter when the best friends tell them to take the Arles train, with Frank informing them that they know. Joe & Bill exit the subway.

In Paris, of course we've grown maybe a little overconfident, we lived here for a while, so maybe a little bit of complacency came into the play, but the way we were snapped back to reality really fast.Bill

Joe & Bill decide to help Nancy & Emily, Lenny & Karyn, and Paul & Amie find a train to Les Baux-de-Provence.

Joe: If we can help some of the - what we think are the weaker teams.
Bill: They call themselves the underdogs.
Joe: So much to our advantage. We would rather be competing against Nancy and Emily and Lenny and Karyn.

Joe & Bill, Lenny & Karyn, Nancy & Emily, and Paul & Amie begin walking down the train platforms, looking for second class. Realizing that they passed the second class cars, Joe & Bill ditch the other teams.

We all start walking looking for second class, we all had second-class tickets. We keep on walking, we turned around, and Team Guido disappeared. They slipped off somewhere, and we're like great.Emily

The other three teams attempt to look for them, but cannot find Team Guido.

We helped them get their tickets through to get the train, and then they disappeared.Karyn

Lenny & Karyn, Nancy & Emily, and Paul & Amie find the correct train car, with the help of a porter. Amie and Emily get pissed at Joe & Bill for ditching them, while Paul says that they cannot be trusted. Frank & Margarita and Rob & Brennan board the train to Les Baux-de-Provence. Bill notices Frank boarding, visibly upsetting Joe. Nancy comments that she feels like someone did not make the train.

Dave & Margaretta read their clue at the train station, while Pat finishes up the Roadblock.

Kevin & Drew place first at the Pit Stop at Château des Baux.

At Gare de Lyon, Dave & Margaretta and Pat & Brenda embark on the train ride to Les Baux-de-Provence.

At Gare d'Avignon-Centre, Joe & Bill disembark from the train, making other teams wonder why they are leaving, despite having tickets to Marseille, where the others are going. Unbeknownst to the other teams, there is a shortcut from Avignon to Les Baux-de-Provence that most French locals know, while Gare de Marseille Saint-Charles is where most tourists go to get to Les Baux-de-Provence. Frank & Margarita and Rob & Brennan also leave the train, confusing Nancy & Emily, Lenny & Karyn, and Paul & Amie, who all decide to continue on the train ride to Marseille. All three teams grab a taxi to Château des Baux. Rob & Brennan reveal that they learned of the shortcut from a Frenchman from Les Baux-de-Provence, and shared it with Frank & Margarita. While Rob & Brennan say that they are aligned with Frank & Margarita, the separated couple do not trust Rob & Brennan, thinking they are fake.

On the third train, Dave & Margaretta also leave at Gare d'Avignon-Centre, utilizing the shortcut. They hail a cab to Château des Baux.

Frank & Margarita place second at the Pit Stop. Rob & Brennan place third. Joe & Bill place fourth.

At Gare de Marseille Saint-Charles, Lenny & Karyn, Nancy & Emily, and Paul & Amie disembark from the train. All three teams hail a taxi to Château des Baux. Dave & Margaretta place fifth. After learning they are fifth, Dave & Margaretta share a kiss. Paul & Amie place sixth. Lenny & Karyn place seventh. Nancy & Emily place eighth. The Underdog alliance celebrates that none of them are eliminated.

At Gare de Marseille Saint-Charles, Pat & Brenda disembark from the train. The mothers pray they are not in last place. At Château des Baux, they meet with Phil, learning they are the last team to arrive and have been eliminated from the race. They share with Phil their mistake of going to the wrong pendulum. Both women are grateful for the trip, despite how short it was.

Route Markers[]

The order of departure from the Arc de Triomphe are as follows:

  1. Pat & Brenda (9:06 pm)
  2. Joe & Bill (11:38 pm)
  3. Rob & Brennan (12:11 pm)
  4. Frank & Margarita (12:18 am)
  5. Kevin & Drew (12:27 am)
  6. Paul & Amie (2:18 am)
  7. Nancy & Emily (2:23 am)
  8. Dave & Margaretta (2:46 am)
  9. Lenny & Karyn (3:03 am)
Though officially checked in at 6th place, Dave improperly performed the previous leg's Roadblock (i.e. both members climbed to the second level of the Eiffel Tower and saw the other teams doing the Roadblock and asked them for directions before finding the clue containing the Roadblock instructions and not having one member perform the task properly), giving Dave & Margaretta time penalty.

Teams were informed to travel to the nearby Roue de Paris, known as La Grande Roue "The Big Wheel" to find the next clue.

Teams will have to find Mariage Frères in Rive Gauche, a 140-year old tea shop, and ask the store manager for a specific blend of tea called L'aventurier. The Fast Forward pass is hidden inside the tea tin. Kevin & Drew won the Fast Forward.

Choice A: Tough Climb
Teams must travel to Notre-Dame de Paris and had to climb up the 297 steps of the cathedral and ring Quasimodo's bell to receive their next clue. The church is nearby, but the teams will have to climb 297 steps.

Dave & Margaretta, Lenny & Karyn, Nancy & Emily, and Paul & Amie chose this task.

Choice B: Easy Walk
Teams had to locate a statue of a cat sitting beside a Foucault pendulum. What they do not know is that there are two Foucault pendulums in Paris, but only the one at the Panthéon has the statue. The other pendulum at the Museum of Arts and Craft does not.

Frank & Margarita, Joe & Bill, Pat & Brenda, and Rob & Brennan chose this task.

Teams must find "the man in a blue suit" across from the Hôtel de Ville. There, they will find the instructions for the Roadblock.

"Choose before you open the card."

The team member will have to dress up in a sanitary suit and walk underground through the Paris sewers to Place du Châtelet, two blocks away.

The Roadblock performers per team are underlined:

Teams must ride a train to their next Pit Stop, Château des Baux in Les Baux-de-Provence. There are only two routes: the more known, but much further Marseilles and the lesser-known shortcut in Avignon. If the teams know the shortcut, they would disembark at Avignon and ride a taxi to the Pit Stop, giving them at least a 1-hour advantage.
