The Amazing Race Wiki

It's Not Personal, It's Business is the fifth episode of The Amazing Race 37.

Story[]

After finishing the previous leg, teams were invited to stay overnight by the local villagers of Penglipuran Village, where they are fascinated by their surroundings and the courtesy of the locals. Next morning, Jonathan & Ana receive the first clue, instructing teams to get a driver with a marked car and make their way to Ubud Monkey Forest. While excited about leaving in first, the couple know the Driver's Seat in the previous leg may come back to haunt them. They discuss how in the previous year, Ana suffered from an ectopic pregnancy and the couple were able to endure the hardship and push forward.

Carson & Jack and Scott & Lori are the next to leave. Carson & Jack are worried their good performances may result in teams wanting to U-Turn them, while Scott & Lori are happy to race in the middle of the pack and consider performing well just bonuses for them. As they reflect on their weight loss journey before they race, they are unaware that several of the other teams behind them consider them a threat. Jonathan & Ana arrive at the monkey forest and find they have to wait there until 8:00.

Melinda & Erika leave next, content with the other teams fighting out in the front and not viewing them as threats. Alyssa & Josiah and Han & Holden follow soon after, with both satisfied on their improving performances. Brett & Mark are frustrated to constantly place in the middle. As Nick & Mike leave, Nick has sunglasses on despite it being dark after getting some rice in his eyes from the Roadblock last leg resulted in some swelling. Pops & Jeff leave last and hope whatever twist this leg has will cause some chaos for the front of the pack.

Carson & Jack arrive at the monkey forest and thank Jonathan & Ana for only giving them 20 pounds at the Roadblock. Scott & Lori express disappointment at Jonathan & Ana for giving them 25 pounds and wasting the 15 pound slot on themselves only to use the Express Pass, but they say its in the past as Jonathan & Ana apologize. Due to the long wait time, the remaining six teams arrive and are equalized at the sanctuary. At 8:00, all the teams are let in and follow the path forward, checking out the various monkeys along the way, until they surprisingly run into Phil.

Phil reveals the twist of this leg is a live Double U-Turn vote, shocking the contestants. The top two voted teams will be U-Turned and forced to complete both sides of the Detour. The teams grab their voting cards and talk with each other on who they are going to vote. Melinda & Erika decide not to do Jonathan & Ana after getting 15 pounds at the Roadblock. After they all figure it out, they gather next to Phil again. Brett & Mark revealed they voted for Scott & Lori for being a strong team that completes challenges quickly. Jonathan & Ana revealed they voted for Nick & Mike since they're a team they don't know as well and could be a competitor in the end. Mike isn't surprised given they were assigned 25 pounds and take it as compliment. Pops & Jeff vote for Jonathan & Ana as payback for getting 25 pounds at the Roadblock, leaving three teams with one vote each.

Han & Holden and Melinda & Erika vote for Scott & Lori. Lori is baffled they got picked, believe they're a slower team. Carson & Jack decide to vote for Jonathan & Ana since they were the top team, surprising Ana given how close they've been. Nick & Mike assumed Jonathan & Ana were guaranteed to be one of the teams, so they decided to vote Scott & Lori to ensure they'd be the second team. Scott & Lori are shocked they got so many votes, comparing the other teams to their sons and claim they're no longer their friends. Mark calls them out for presenting themselves as a weak team when they've consistently placed in the top three and feel like they're using it as a social strategy, while Scott thinks their positivity is being misinterpreted. Alyssa & Josiah vote for Jonathan & Ana, though hold no ill will for the 25 pounds. Lastly, Scott & Lori U-Turn Jonathan & Ana.

With Jonathan & Ana and Scott & Lori getting four votes each, they'll both be required to finish both sides of the Detour. Phil then hands the teams their next clues and sends them on their way. The nine teams must take their drivers and head to Pandawa Beach. Carson & Jack are shocked not one team voted for them and are pleased they're winning the social game. The rest of the teams are glad the two top performing teams have a handicap and more teams have a chance to place first. Ana is upset the other teams voted for them, but Jonathan tells her to stop whining and crying. Scott & Lori are determined to overcome the U-Turn vote and remain in the race.

Han & Holden are the first to make it to the beach, where they uncover the Detour: Coconuts or Coral. In coconuts, teams must load 60 coconuts onto a provided bicycle, then deliver them from Pandawa Beach Cafe down the to the opposite end of the beach to Warung Van Ronden Cafe and stack them on and around a rack. Once they have finished, they would receive a receipt as proof of delivery, which they must exchange along with their bicycle back at Pandawa Beach Cafe. In Coral, teams must set up a hexagonal reef star structure using five different species of coral. Once the marine biologist has approved of their work, both team members must snorkel with the star out to a designated area in the Indian Ocean, and deposit it onto the ocean floor for coral reef restoration.

Han & Holden, believing Coral would be too intricate, choose Coconuts, while Brett & Mark choose Coral since Brett is passionate about restoring them. Nick & Mike decide to do Coconuts since it's a more physical task, while Carson & Jack pick Coral because they want to go swimming. Alyssa & Josiah, Melinda & Erika, and Pops & Jeff choose Coconuts. Jonathan & Ana look for the locations of the task after reading the clue. Brett & Mark arrive at the task and begin to assemble their reef star to match the example, with Carson & Jack joining them shortly after. Carson & Jack notice how detailed the individual corals are and try to match them as best as they can. Scott & Lori arrive to the clue box in last and decide to do Coconuts first to get the physical task done early.

After seeing the two locations, Jonathan & Ana decide to do Coral first. The teams at Coconuts struggle with trying to load the batches of coconuts on the bike. Nick & Mike start with 15 while Alyssa & Josiah load 30, and both teams delicately try to push their bikes to the other café. Jonathan & Ana's first two attempts at the cage are rejected, with the gamers believing they're rushing it after getting flustered from the U-Turn. Nick & Mike and Alyssa & Josiah deliver their first batches to the café, with the latter losing one coconut along the way. The rest of the teams performing it bring their loads, ranging from 15 to 30. After Jonathan & Ana's third attempt is rejected, they try more closely to follow the coral in the example. Melinda gets slightly snippy at Erika during the delivery, but Erika tells her they need to pace themselves, especially since they have some legroom from the U-Turned teams.

Carson & Jack and Brett & Mark get their cages approved. The two teams swim out to the water to put the cages past the buoy. After returning, they receive their next clue, they must direct their driver to Nusa Dua Beach. While passing Scott & Lori, Carson & Jack inform them to look at the colors of the coral as the two teams root for each other. As the other Coconut teams struggle in the sun, Alyssa & Josiah finish getting 60 to their station and begin to assemble all of them. Jonathan & Ana finally get their cage approved on the sixth attempt after figuring out one coral they had wrong. Alyssa & Josiah have their rack approved and go to return the receipt. Scott & Lori and Pops & Jeff begin assembling their racks while Nick & Mike are a few coconuts short.

Jonathan & Ana prepare to bring their cage into the ocean. Ana admits going into the ocean is one of her greatest fears after almost drowning when she was young. The couple initially have difficulty overcoming the waves since Ana can't swim well, but after Ana gets a lifejacket, they are able to go out deeper. Alyssa & Josiah bring the bike and receipt back and are the first to complete the Coconut task. Pops & Jeff enjoy the Coconut challenge since hard work is in their element as Nick & Mike return with the coconuts they need and begin assembling the rack. Jonathan & Ana successfully get the cage out and are proud of Ana for facing her fears, while Scott & Lori and Pops & Jeff get their racks approved. As Jonathan & Ana and Scott & Lori switch challenges, Han & Holden begin to assemble the coconuts while Melinda & Erika get their last few.

After learning from Melinda & Erika how to put the coconuts on the bike, Jonathan & Ana struggle with the early part of the challenge and have a communication breakdown. Scott & Lori have some issues placing the coral as most of them look too similar. Nick & Mike have some difficulties with stacking the coconuts and take a moment to meditate. Han & Holden get their rack approved just as Melinda & Erika arrive with their last batch. Carson & Jack arrive at Nusa Dua Beach and uncover a Roadblock. One team member must choose a surfboard, paddle out into the surf to a designated area in the Indian Ocean, and search among many surfers for one with a surfboard with an identical decal as theirs, and bring them back.

Jack volunteers to do it as Brett & Mark arrive, where Mark suggests Brett does it since he's better with water. Jack picks an orange surfboard with a BVM decal. As he goes out and repeats the orange color, Carson's concerned he may try to look for the color instead of the decal. Jack struggles as he paddles in the water, still sore from the rice Roadblock in the last leg. Brett chooses a surfboard with an island sticker. Scott & Lori's first cage attempt is rejected and they begin to redo most of it. As Jonathan & Ana continue to bicker at the bikes, Han & Holden receive their next clue. Nick & Mike and Melinda & Erika get their racks approved at the same time. Jonathan & Ana prepare their final bike load, afraid as teams are leaving and believing Scott & Lori will ace the Coral task, as Jonathan starts to develop a headache from the heat.

Scott & Lori continue to struggle at the Coral challenge, having seven attempts rejected. Jonathan & Ana begin assembly as Nick & Mike and Melinda & Erika receive their next clue. At the Roadblock, Jack continues to search for an orange surfboard, not noticing one with the same decal near him. Mark & Carson have fun on the beach as the only gay teams left in the competition. Brett eventually finds a surfboard that matches his island sticker and begins swimming back with the surfer. Alyssa & Josiah arrive, with Josiah choosing to do the Roadblock. Brett is approved and he and Mark get their last clue, to head to the Pit Stop, the Taksu Art Stage, on foot at the other side of the beach.

After figuring out he needs to find the decal, Jack finds his matching surfer and they swim back slowly. Josiah picks a Koral decal with a blue surfboard. Being a seasoned swimmer, Josiah rushes out to the water fast as he congratulates Jack for making it back. Jack receives their last clue as Brett & Mark ask a local for directions, finding out that the Pit Stop is a 30-minute walk away. The two teams race to the end, with the Vegas performers coming out on top. They are greeted by a dancing and singing tribe as Phil awards them $10,000 for arriving in first. Brett & Mark are ecstatic about finally winning a leg after being in the middle and back of the pack most of the time. Carson & Jack place second and are glad they're not coming across as too strong to the rest despite consistently performing well.

Josiah finds his matching "surf brother" as Pops & Jeff arrive, with Pops taking the challenge on. Josiah is approved as Pops heads out to find a surfboard with a twister decal. Jonathan & Ana get their rack approved, but before they can go back, Jonathan takes an extended break, being at his limit with the sun and his patience. As Scott & Lori see Jonathan & Ana finish, they finally get their cage approved. Scott swims out to put the cage beyond the buoys as Lori cheers him on. Ana tries to encourage Jonathan they're not out, but he tells her to stop talking so he can deal with his headache. Scott & Lori are the last to complete their Detour and receive their clue.

Pops finds his matching surfer and brings him back to receive the last clue. Han & Holden arrive at the beach with Han agreeing to take it on because she's a seasoned surfer. She picks a decal labeled Marunui Surf and heads out confidently. Alyssa & Josiah dance with the tribe as they happily take third place. Han initially looks for similar surfboard colors before realizing she's looking for stickers. After finding her guy, she catches a wave on the way back and decides to surf it before she and Holden head to the Pit Stop. Mike volunteers for the Roadblock since Nick's eyes are still recovering, and he picks a winged decal labeled Angel. Mike has difficulty swimming with the surfboard and doesn't get lucky finding his guy, resting his head out of exhaustion as he's out there. Pops & Jeff meanwhile arrive in fourth place. Mike eventually finds the matching decal and breathes heavily as Nick congratulates him. Melinda & Erika arrive next at the beach, with Erika choosing to do it since Melinda's too tired from the Detour. She picks a sticker labeled Longshore and heads out, glad she's in the water on a hot day.

As Han & Holden place fifth, Erika gets lucky and finds her matching surfer on the first board. Nick & Mike get lost along the way to the Pit Stop, allowing the mother and daughter to pass them and place sixth. The brothers join them seconds later to place seventh. Nick & Mike don't mind getting a vote at the U-Turn, especially since the team that did it is behind them. The last two teams arrive at the Roadblock, with Jonathan & Scott taking it on since Ana and Lori aren't as great in the water. Jonathan goes out with a Koral decal while Scott gets one labeled Sunset Surf & Co. As Scott makes his way to the other surfers and Jonathan, Jonathan begins to break down from the heat and pressure and takes a moment to rest.

Jonathan finds his surfer and slowly makes his way back while swimming through the pain. As Scott eventually finds his surfer, Jonathan attempts to take breaks in between paddles as he makes it back to shore. He makes it back first, and Ana gives Lori a hug before she and a stubborn Jonathan head to the Pit Stop. Scott makes it back and he and Lori begin rushing to the Pit Stop mere minutes after Jonathan & Ana left. The two married teams rush on foot to the end, with Jonathan & Ana surviving and placing eighth. Ana says she needs to give Jonathan his space when he's vulnerable in the heat and work through it, and Jonathan says the leg taught him how much the twists can really shake their game up and accepts they can't win every leg as much as he wants to.

Scott & Lori are disappointed to learn they placed last and are eliminated, but go out with a smile on their face. They accepted that they bring out the best in each other, which ultimately was why they were targeted by the other teams. They understand their kids will know they gave it their all and agree they ran with the best partner they could, affirming their love for each other as they look out at the ocean one more time before leaving.
