Nancy & Emily

Nancy Lundgren Hoyt^[1] and Emily Hoyt are a Mother/Daughter team on The Amazing Race 1.

Although not as physically adept as other teams, Nancy & Emily relied on their tenacity and endeared themselves to many of their competitors, allowing them to make it to the final five. However, after a heated altercation with Joe & Bill at the Tunis airport in the sixth leg, Nancy admitted to losing her competitive edge for the rest of the Race. After one last attempt to make it to the final four via the Fast Forward ended in a loss to Team Guido, Nancy finally convinced a frustrated Emily to quit the ensuing Detour. Even though they would still make it to the Pit Stop before Joe & Bill, they were issued a 24-hour penalty for quitting the Detour, resulting in their elimination in 5th place.

Nancy and Emily are the only parent-and-child Team on THE AMAZING RACE. They've enjoyed traveling extensively together, but have had a few disagreements along the way. They're a strong Team for THE AMAZING RACE because while mother Nancy is good at planning and considerate of others, daughter Emily is impulsive and competitive.

Notes: 1: Leg 1 had an unaired Roadblock, which Emily was shown to have performed in the DVD release. 2: Nancy & Emily initially arrived 4th at the Pit Stop, but were issued a a 24-hour penalty for forfeiting the Private Detour. Joe & Bill, the only team trailing Nancy & Emily at that point, checked in during the penalty time and Nancy & Emily were eliminated before the 24 hours elapsed.

Post-Race[]

Emily dated fellow The Amazing Race 1 racer Brennan Swain, but they eventually broke up.^[3]
- She got married to Matt Crew in 2009.^[4]
On December 8, 2011, Nancy passed away at the age of 56 after a long battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.^[5]

Nancy & Emily are the first team of blood relatives and the first parent/child team to compete.
First team to be eliminated due to a penalty.
- This is also the longest time penalty in the history of the race (tied with Maria & Tiffany in The Amazing Race 15) and is unlikely to be broken due to rule changes prior to The Amazing Race 17.
First team to be eliminated in Thailand.

US[]

Highest placing mother/daughter team, 5th place.
Emily performed the most Roadblocks out of any woman, prior to the six-Roadblock rule being instituted in The Amazing Race 6, performing 7.
