Sleep Deprivation Is Really Starting to Irritate Me is the sixth episode of The Amazing Race 9.

Synopsis[]

Tensions mount and the stress of the race takes its toll on several teams who get lost while trying to find their next clue in Sicily.

While racing through the ancient streets of Sicily, teams choose between a detour where they must either sell four kilograms of small Italian fish in a busy open-air market, or carry a 32-pound swordfish one-third of a mile through a congested part of the city in order to receive their next clue. Teams are also faced with a roadblock that requires one team member to score a goal in the popular Italian sport of "Kayak Polo" while competing against a team of professional players.[2]

Story[]

Route Markers[]

The order of departure from Tempio di Segesta are as follows:

  1. BJ & Tyler (2:29 am)
  2. Eric & Jeremy (4:11 am)
  3. Joseph & Monica (5:00 am)
  4. Fran & Barry (5:18 am)
  5. Lake & Michelle (6:06 am)
  6. Dave & Lori (6:25 am)
  7. Ray & Yolanda (6:34 am)

Teams must drive to Catalina and find the Anfiteatro Romano at Piazza Stesicoro. Here, teams must search the ruins to find their next clue.

Teams must count the number of busts on the fence posts surrounding the grounds of the Anfiteatro Romano. Once teams have counted the busts on the fence posts, they must search for the groundskeeper and provide the correct number of busts (41), to receive their next clue.

Choice A: Big Fish
Teams must make their way on foot to a street vendor at Via Alessi and each pick up a 32-pound swordfish, then carry it for a third of a mile to Il Mercato Storico la Pescheria. At the market, teams must deliver the swordfish to a fish vendor named Jagino to receive their next clue.

BJ & Tyler, Dave & Lori, Eric & Jeremy, Joseph & Monica, Lake & Michelle, and Ray & Yolanda chose this task.

Choice B: Little Fish
Teams must make their way on foot to Il Mercato Storico la Pescheria and sell 4 kilograms of a small fish locally known as triglia. After selling the fish, the vendor would give them their next clue.

Only Fran & Barry chose this task.

Teams must drive themselves to Siracusa and find Ponte Umbertino, where they would find their next clue.

"Who's well-balanced?"

The team member assigned to perform this Roadblock must participate in a popular Italian sport: kayak polo. They would join a professional team and participate in an ongoing match. Once the team member scored one goal, the coach would give them their next clue.

The Roadblock performers per team are underlined:

Teams must make their way on foot to Fonte Aretusa to check in. For coming in first, Eric & Jeremy won a cruise for two to Mexico sponsored by Travelocity.
