The Amazing Race: All-Stars (2007) is the eleventh season of the reality television show, The Amazing Race. It premiered on February 18, 2007 and ended on May 6, 2007 on CBS. This season was the first to feature returning racers. The entire season was released on DVD on May 1, 2013.[1]
Production[]
As early as 2004, there had been talk about an all-star edition, with speculation that it would occur during the eighth season, as with Survivor. These rumors were fueled by reports that season 4 winner Reichen Lehmkuhl had been invited to appear in a future all-star season. Speculation continued for the next few years, particularly after CBS aired all-star editions of their two other reality competition series, Survivor and Big Brother. Despite skepticism from host Phil Keoghan initially,[2] CBS moved forward with an all-star edition in November 2006.[3]
Filming began on November 20, 2006 and concluded on December 17, 2006. This season traveled a total of 45,000 miles (72,000 km), across nine countries on six continents.
Travelocity and Yamaha were the official sponsors during this season and provided prizes throughout the Race to winning teams on certain legs, while ThermaCare ran a campaign in which certain packages of heat wraps contained a mini-DVD titled Re-run the Race that would feature highlights from the first ten seasons.[4] In addition, ThermaCare also ran an ad each week called "The Amazing Race All-Stars Moment of Relief", which highlighted memorable moments from previous seasons.
Beginning with this season, a web series titled Elimination Station was released on CBS.com following each episode. Elimination Station followed the eliminated teams at Sequesterville, where they were allowed to relax and sight-see while they waited to be flown to the final destination city for the end of the Race.
Casting[]
Teams from all previous seasons (except Family Edition) were considered.
Some teams that were considered, but not chosen were Ken & Gerard, Flo & Drew (both from season 3), Kelly & Jon (season 4), Colin & Christie, Linda & Karen (both from season 5), Kris & Jon (season 6), Lynn & Alex (season 7), and Dave & Lori (season 9). (Keoghan himself created a list of teams that he believed should return. That list consisted of Ken & Gerard, Kelly & Jon, Colin & Christie (who declined due to Christie's pregnancy [5]), Kris & Jon, Dave & Lori, and the 10 teams who returned on this season).[6] Casting was criticized in some corners for not picking more than one winner team (especially Chip & Kim and BJ & Tyler).[7]
Twists/Changes[]
- All-Stars: For the first time, former racers returned for another shot to win the million dollar prize.
- Roadblock Limits: This season featured 12 Roadblocks, leaving for a maximum Roadblock split of 6-6.
- Yield: Yields are available on certain legs of the Race.
- Intersection: In the eighth leg, the remaining six teams were required to divide themselves into three groups of two, performing all tasks and making decisions together until further notice.
- Marked for Elimination: A team that came in last place on a Non-Elimination Leg must arrive at the following leg's Pit Stop in first place. Otherwise, they would incur a 30-minute penalty.
- Rules and Penalties: The following rule was revealed on this season:
- Though ties at Pit Stops have been disallowed following The Amazing Race 4, Intersected teams who claim a Fast Forward together may check in at the Pit Stop together. Should they arrive in first place, however, they must decide who among them would claim the prize for winning the leg.
