Production[]
The show moved to a new timeslot of Sundays at 8 pm, where it would stay for the next fourteen seasons.
Applications for this season were due on January 20, 2006 (one week later than the original deadline), while interviews were conducted in March and April 2006. Filming began on May 27, 2006 and finished on June 24, 2006. This season traveled a total of 40,000 miles (64,000 km) across 13 countries in four continents.
Sprint and Travelocity were the official sponsors during this season and provided prizes throughout the race to winning teams on certain legs.
Twists/Changes[]
- Expanded Cast: For the first time since The Amazing Race 4, the Race featured 12 teams.
- Superleg:
- A Superleg consisted of 2 legs formed into one Double-Length Leg with a rest period midway throughout the leg.
- A twist occurs midway in the portion of Double-Length Leg that the teams would learn "Keep Racing" at the end of the first half to begin the start of the second half.
- Money: A one-time change happened at the start of the third leg, teams are not received money, instead they would earn their money for that leg by selling flowers during the Roadblock. However, they are not permitted to beg or sell items to exchange for money. The fourth leg would receive teams a local currency.
- Yield: As with the previous season, the Yield has only two per race and it allows any one team to force another team to stop racing for a predetermined amount of time.
- Intersection: An Intersection requires each team to pair up with one other team and perform all tasks and make decisions together until further notice. This was first debuted in the eighth leg.
- Surprise Elimination: It is also called Midpoint Elimination that occurs each team is eliminated outside of the Pit Stop. Furthermore, the first leg would still have a standard elimination at the end.
- Non-Elimination Legs: Following a serious change happened in the previous season, a new penalty occurs that the team may face Marked for Elimination for the last team to arrive.
- If the team arrives first in the next leg, the penalty was nullified.
- If the team does not arrive first, they could occur a 30-minute penalty until the last team to arrive in the Pit Stop. Unless, if the team arrives in last place, they will be eliminated.
- Rules and Penalties:
- A team that improperly used a mode of local transportation resulted in a 30-minute penalty.
- A team member fails to complete the Roadblock would incur a 4-hour penalty.
