The Amazing Race 12 is the twelveth season of the reality television show, The Amazing Race. It premiered on November 4, 2007 and ended on January 20, 2008 on CBS. The entire season was released on DVD on March 24, 2014.[1]
Production[]
Applications for The Amazing Race 12 were due on January 16, 2007. Semi-finalist interviews were held in February 2007 or March 2007 and final casting interviews took place in April 2007.
Filming began on July 8, 2007 and concluded on July 29, 2007. This season traveled a total of 30,000 miles (48,000 km), across ten countries on four continents. This was noted to be due to a shorter-than-normal course, featuring only 11 single-length legs (from the standard 13 single-length legs in the first 11 seasons) filmed over 21 days.[2]
Producers stated that Non-Elimination Legs would be removed,[2] [3] which was initially interpreted by media outlets as resulting in the complete removal of Non-Elimination Legs. However, it turned out that there would only be less Non-Elimination Legs that in previous seasons, in part due to the shortened course.
Executive Producer Bertram van Munster also stated that penalties would be removed for this season.[2] This manifested in both the Yield and the Marked for Elimination penalty for teams that come in last place on Non-Elimination Legs being removed. In their place, the U-Turn and the Speed Bump penalty were introduced, respectively.
The season was initially scheduled to air mid-season,[4] but was bumped up to November 4, 2007 due to low ratings for Viva Laughlin.[5]
Travelocity and Yamaha were the official sponsors during this season and would provide the prizes awarded to first place teams on certain legs, while BlackBerry sponsored a task in the seventh leg.
Twists/Changes[]
- 11 Legs: Following a series of budget cuts, the Race was shortened to 11 single-length legs.
- Roadblock Limits: This season featured 11 Roadblocks, leaving for a maximum Roadblock split of 6-5.
- U-Turn: In place of the Yield, U-Turns are available on certain legs of the Race. A team that uses their U-Turn power may force another team to complete both sides of that leg's Detour. However, a team may only use the U-Turn once.
- Speed Bump: For this season, the penalty for a team coming in last place on a Non-Elimination Leg was changed. That team would encounter an additional task in the following leg that only they would have to perform.
- Rules and Penalties: The following rule and penalty were revealed on this season:
- A team that hitchhikes from one Route Marker to another would be turned away, required to return to the previous Route Marker, and take a legal form of transportation to the next one.
