The Amazing Race 14 is the fourteenth season of the reality television show, The Amazing Race. It premiered on February 15, 2009 and ended on May 10, 2009 on CBS. The entire season was released on DVD on May 21, 2014.
Production[]
Applications for The Amazing Race 14 were due on May 28, 2008. Semi-finalist interviews were held sometime in June 2008, and the final casting interviews were held in Los Angeles around late June or early July 2008. Location scouting took place in August 2008.
Filming began on October 31, 2008 and concluded on November 21, 2008. This season traveled a total of 40,000 miles (64,000 km), across nine countries on three continents.
This season saw cosmetic changes to the show's presentation , with the use of a new font for the on-screen chyrons, new route map graphics updated with Google Earth, a new intro sequence, a new musical score, and the use of split screens. In addition, less time was devoted to airport scenes in the final edit, with more time devoted to establishing shots featuring scenery and locations. According to Executive Producer Bertram van Munster, this was done to give the show "a new coat of paint".[1]
Travelocity was the only official sponsor of the season and would provide the prizes awarded to first place teams on certain legs.
Twists/Changes[]
- 12 Legs: After the previous two seasons featured only 11 single-length legs each, the Race was extended to 12 single-length legs.
- Roadblock Limits: This season featured 11 Roadblocks, leaving for a maximum Roadblock split of 6-5.
- U-Turn: U-Turns are available on certain legs of the Race. The fourth leg saw the introduction of the Blind U-Turn, in which the team that used it did not have to publicly reveal themselves by using their "Courtesy Of" photo.
- Speed Bump: A team that came in last place on a Non-Elimination Leg would encounter an additional task in the following leg that only they would have to perform.
- No-Rest Leg: Upon checking in at the Pit Stop at the end of the tenth leg, teams were given their next clue by host Phil Keoghan and immediately began the eleventh leg. The first team to arrive received a prize, while the last place team did not face a penalty.
- Rules and Penalties: The following rules and penalties were revealed on this season:
- A team that attempts to check in at a Pit Stop without their travel documents would be turned away and required to retrieve them before being allowed to check in.
- A team that tampers with production-provided equipment meant for other teams would incur a 30-minute penalty.
- A team that completes an action during a task that violates any provision explicitly prohibited in their clue would incur a 30-minute penalty. The penalty for such an infraction was previously 1 hour, as of The Amazing Race 3.
- A team that barters with their personal belongings to make any Race-related payments would incur a 2-hour penalty.
