The Amazing Race 2 is the second installment of the The Amazing Race (US) and the reality television franchise The Amazing Race. It premiered on March 11, 2002 and ended on May 15, 2002 on CBS. The entire season was released on DVD (exclusively only through Amazon.com) on January 24, 2011.[1][2]
Production[]
Casting for the second season began during the summer of 2001 before the first season premiered. Casting finals took place in Los Angeles in September.[3] Location scouting took place during September 2001 but was paused for a month and a half following the September 11 attacks. Filming was originally scheduled to take place on November and December 2001, but was postponed to January and February 2002, for which they traveled 52,000 miles (84,000 km) miles in 28 days, spanning eight different countries across five continents.[4][5]
The second season also debuted a number of presentation changes for the rest of the series. Unlike the first season, teams were now required to read clues out loud to the cameras. In legs that featured self-driving, the team's cameraman now sat in the co-pilot seat, while the sound operator and the non-driving team member sat in the back cabin, with the non-driving team member directly behind their partner. The color scheme for all Route Markers was changed to yellow and red for better visibility. Another change was host Phil Keoghan and a local greeter welcoming all teams at the Pit Stops for the end of each leg; in the first season, he appeared to greet only the last-place team.
A leg was originally designed for Argentina, but was dropped due to the country's financial crisis.[6] It would eventually be visited in The Amazing Race 5.
American Airlines and Royal Caribbean were the two official sponsors of the season and would provide the prizes awarded to first place teams on certain legs.
Twists/Changes[]
- Multiple Flight Itineraries Allowed: Beginning with this season, teams could now book multiple travel itineraries for themselves if they discovered another flight that they would prefer after purchasing the first booking.
- Rules and Penalties: The following penalty was revealed on this season:
- A team that is caught speeding by local law enforcement would incur a penalty of 30-minutes plus time gained, which would be applied at the start of the next leg.
