The Amazing Race 23 is the twenty-third season of the reality television series, The Amazing Race. It premiered on September 29, 2013 and ended on December 8, 2013 on CBS. The entire season was released on DVD on November 21, 2017.

Production

Applications for this season were closed on April 26, 2013. Semifinal interviews and final casting selection both took place in May 2013.

Filming began on June 9, 2013 and concluded on July 2, 2013. This season traveled a total of 35,000 miles (56,000 km), across nine countries on four continents.

The show's logo was updated for the first time since The Amazing Race 14 with a 3D blue marble layout. The intro sequence and on-screen graphics were also updated to go along with this change.

Travelocity and Ford were the official sponsors during this season and would provide the prizes awarded to first place teams on certain legs.

Twists/Changes

• Roadblock Limits: This season featured 13 Roadblocks, with team members limited to performing a maximum of 6 Roadblocks before the final leg, leaving for a maximum Roadblock split of 7-6.
• Double Express Pass: The team that wins the first leg would be awarded two Express Passes. However, they must give the second Express Pass away to another team by the end of the fifth leg. Both Express Passes allow their holders to skip any task of their choosing until the end of the eighth leg.
• No-Rest Leg: Upon checking in at the Pit Stop at the end of the fourth leg, teams were given their next clue by host Phil Keoghan and immediately began the next leg. The first team to arrive received a prize, while the last place team did not face a penalty.
• Double U-Turn: Double U-Turns are available on certain legs of the Race. Beginning with this season, the U-Turn board returned to using physical photos instead of electronic tablets. However, teams no longer need to hold on to their "Courtesy Of" photos throughout the Race as these are now placed at the U-Turn board.
• Speed Bump: A team that came in last place on a Non-Elimination Leg would encounter an additional task in the following leg that only they would have to perform.

Notes: 1: Nicole & Travis initially arrived first at the Pit Stop, but received a 30-minute penalty for taking a taxi to the Pit Stop when the clue instructed them to make their way on foot. During their penalty, Tim & Marie checked-in first, dropping them to second. 2: Leo & Jamal initially arrived 1st, but were not allowed check in after they failed to pay their taxi driver properly. By the time they paid had paid their taxi and returned to the mat, Chester & Ephraim had already checked in the Pit Stop in 1st place, dropping Leo & Jamal to 2nd. 3: Due to trouble with connecting flights and delays, Chester & Ephraim had fallen so far behind that all other teams had already checked into the Pit Stop by the time they finally arrived in Lisbon. Upon arrival at Lisbon Airport, host Phil Keoghan greeted them personally to eliminate them. 4: Leg 4 had no mandatory rest period between legs, and all teams were ordered to continue racing. The team who checked in last on this leg did not face a Speed Bump in the next leg. 5: Tim & Marie used their Express Pass to bypass the Pose Detour. 6: Nicole & Travis used their Express Pass to bypass the Detour. They did not choose a Detour task due to the Detour's singular location. 7: Leo & Jamal departed the Pit Start two minutes after their scheduled departure time because they accidentally overslept.

• Most number of all-male teams, 5 (tied with The Amazing Race 4, The Amazing Race 30, The Amazing Race 32, The Amazing Race 35, and The Amazing Race 37).
• First season where two teams used an Express Pass.

• Second season where no new countries or territories were visited (after The Amazing Race 21).
• Fifth season where all the final three teams are co-ed teams (after The Amazing Race 5, The Amazing Race 6, The Amazing Race 7, The Amazing Race: Family Edition, and The Amazing Race 19).
• This season's visit to Portugal made the country have the largest gap (at the time of airing in 2013) in between visits. It was last visited in The Amazing Race 3, 20 seasons prior.
