The Amazing Race Wiki

The Amazing Race 27 is the twenty-seventh season of the reality television show, The Amazing Race. It premiered on September 25, 2015 and ended on December 11, 2015 on CBS. The entire season was released on DVD on November 21, 2017.

Production[]

Applications for the season were due on February 2015. Semi-finalist interviews were held in March 2015, and the final casting interviews were held in April 2015.

Filming began on June 22, 2015 and concluded on July 14, 2015. This season traveled a total of 34,000 miles (55,000 km), across ten countries on five continents. Similarly to The Amazing Race 25, the Starting Line was opened to the public, with fans invited to attend.[1] This allowed for the identity of the teams to be revealed on the same day.[2]

Travelocity and Fitbit were the official sponsors during this season and would provide the prizes awarded to first place teams on certain legs.

Twists/Changes[]

  • Roadblock Limits: This season featured 12 Roadblocks, leaving for a maximum Roadblock split of 6-6.
  • Hand-Off Express Pass: The team that wins the first leg would be awarded the Express Pass, which allows them to skip any task of their choosing until the end of the fifth leg. Once used, they must inform host Phil Keoghan at the next Pit Stop which team they choose to give the Express Pass to. That team would then be able to use the Express Pass until the end of the following leg.
  • U-Turn: U-Turns are available on certain legs of the Race. In addition to the Double U-Turn, which has been the standard variation since The Amazing Race 17, single U-Turns were offered for the first time since The Amazing Race 16. Beginning with this season, the U-Turn board may now variably be placed either before or after the Detour.
  • No-Rest Leg: Upon checking in at the Pit Stop at the end of the fourth and sixth legs, teams were given their next clue by Keoghan and immediately began the next leg. The last place team did not face a penalty.
  • Speed Bump: A team that came in last place on a Non-Elimination Leg would encounter an additional task in the following leg that only they would have to perform.
  • Rules and Penalties: The following rules and penalties were revealed on this season:
    • Beginning with this season, the non-participating team member in a Roadblock may no longer offer their partner verbal assistance. A team that does so would incur a 30-minute penalty.
    • A team that embarks at a location other than the one specified in their clue would incur a 30-minute penalty. In addition, if the location they embarked from was faster than what is specified in their clue, they would incur an additional time penalty to compensate for the time gained.

Notes:
2: Because Kelly & Shevonne completed the Detour hours after all the other teams had checked in, host Phil Keoghan came out to the Detour location to eliminate them.
3: Denise & James Earl initially arrived 5th, but received a 30-minute penalty due to Denise verbally helping James Earl at the Roadblock. Logan & Chris checked in during this time, dropping them to 6th.
4: Tanner & Josh used their Express Pass to bypass the Roadblock on Leg 4. Before doing so, Josh revealed that he elected to perform the Roadblock, so this is reflected in the total Roadblock count.[15]
5: Legs 4 and 6 had no mandatory rest period between legs, and all teams were ordered to continue racing. The teams who checked in last on these leg did not face a Speed Bump in the next leg.
6: Tiffany & Krista used their Blind U-Turn power on Justin & Diana. However, Justin & Diana were actually ahead of them, thus the U-Turn had no effect.
7: Denise & James Earl used their Express Pass to bypass the Crocs Detour on Leg 5.
8: Justin & Diana initially arrived 3rd, but received a 30-minute penalty for taking the Kowloon ferry to Macau when the clue required them to take the Hong Kong-Macau ferry, plus an additional 25-minutes to compensate for the shorter crossing time, for a total 55-minute penalty. This did not affect their placement.
