The Amazing Race 28 is the twenty-eighth season of the reality television show, The Amazing Race. It premiered on February 12, 2016 and ended on May 13, 2016 on CBS. The entire season was released on DVD on October 25, 2018.
Production[]
Unlike previous seasons, no applications were taken for this season. Instead, production invited teams consisting of at least one notable internet celebrity who had achieved fame through social media platforms such as Instagram, Vine, and YouTube.[2] Executive Producer Bertram van Munster stated that the idea of casting social media personalities was suggested by CBS, due to the fact that CBS wanted to see the show to gain more involvement with social media.[3]
Host Phil Keoghan acknowledged that the theme had the potential to alienate existing viewers, but explained that this season was a "social experiment" to introduce the show to younger viewers who may not have been born when The Amazing Race premiered in 2001.[4] He further explained that the show was "embracing the zeitgeist" by capitalizing on the ubiquity of social media.[2]
Filming began on November 15, 2015 and concluded on December 6, 2015. This season traveled a total of 27,000 miles (43,000 km), across ten countries on four continents. As part of the theme, the cast was revealed prior to the start of filming, with teams confirming their participation on their respective social media platforms.[5]
Instead of a traditional Starting Line, teams began the Race in their homes around the United States, a first in The Amazing Race franchise history. Teams' arrival at the first Route Marker of the Race was live streamed on Keoghan's Facebook page.[6][7]
Travelocity was the only official sponsor of the season and would provide the prizes awarded to first place teams on certain legs.
Twists/Changes[]
- Virtual Starting Line: For the first time, teams began the Race in their homes rather than at a centralized location. They received a video message from host Phil Keoghan informing them that the Race had started before taking a production-provided taxi to a designated airport. Teams assigned to the same airport were able to socialize before being flown to their first destination. Once all teams arrived at Mexico City International Airport, they were released by production at the same time and began racing in earnest.
- Roadblock Limits: This season featured 14 Roadblocks, with team members limited to performing a maximum of 6 Roadblocks before the final leg. The final leg then featured two Roadblocks, with each team member required to perform one, leaving for a maximum Roadblock split of 7-7.
- Speed Bump: A team that came in last place on a Non-Elimination Leg would encounter an additional task in the following leg that only they would have to perform.
- Double U-Turn: Double U-Turns are available on certain legs of the Race. A U-Turn on the third leg was unaired.[8]
- No-Rest Leg: Upon checking in at the Pit Stop at the end of the sixth leg, teams were given their next clue by Keoghan and immediately began the next leg. The first team to arrive received a prize, while the last place team did not face a penalty.
- Express Pass: The team that wins the sixth leg would be awarded the Express Pass, which allows them to skip any task of their choosing until the end of the eighth leg.
- Rules and Penalties: The following rules and penalties were revealed on this season:
- A team that improperly completes a Roadblock would incur a time penalty of unspecified length,[9] reverting to the rule seen in The Amazing Race 1. The penalty for such an infraction was previously being turned away from the Pit Stop and required to properly complete the task before being allowed to check in, as of The Amazing Race 7.
