The Amazing Race 36 is the thirty-sixth season of the reality television show, The Amazing Race. It premiered on March 13, 2024 and ended on May 15, 2024 on CBS.
Production[]
Applications were due on May 28, 2022. Casting began on June 13, 2022,[4][5] and closed on September 16, 2022.[6]
Filming began on October 25, 2022 and concluded on November 17, 2022. This season traveled a total of 11,711 miles (18,847 km), across eight countries on two continents. Much like The Amazing Race 33 and The Amazing Race 34, this season used an Amazing Race-branded Global Crossing Airlines Airbus 320 charter airplane due to the then-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, retaining the safety protocols enacted by production as a response to the pandemic.[7]
Though billed as the thirty-sixth season, it was the 35th season to be filmed and produced under the original working title The Amazing Race 35. This marks the first time the show has aired seasons out of order. On May 10, 2023, CBS announced that season 35 would air 90-minute episodes instead of the standard 60-minute episodes due to the ongoing 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.[8] Due to the expansion to 90-minutes, production decided to film its predecessor, The Amazing Race 35 – the 36th season to be filmed – in June 2023, which was designed with a route and format intended to fill the extended timeslot instead of trying to re-edit this season's already-finished 60-minute episodes to pad for time, clarifying that the premiere of this season had been postponed indefinitely, but would air at a later date.[9]
However, on November 13, 2023, it was announced that this season would continue to air 90-minute episodes beside Survivor 46, much like the previous season. Thus, the decision was ultimately made to re-edit this season's original 60-minute episodes to accommodate for the additional 30-minute runtime.[2][9][10]
Expedia was the only official sponsor of the season and would provide the prizes awarded to first place teams on certain legs.
Twists/Changes[]
- Expanded Cast: As with the previous season, the Race featured 13 teams.
- Roadblock Limits: This season featured 14 Roadblocks, leaving for a maximum Roadblock split of 7-7.
- COVID Protocols: The Race retained the safety protocols seen in The Amazing Race 33 and The Amazing Race 34 as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic:
- Chartered Flights: Teams would be transported by production on charter flights instead of traveling on commercial flights.
- Departure Groups: To account for the lack of commercial travel, teams were released from the Pit Start in a location in the general area of the upcoming leg in staggered groups of one to four teams — depending on the number of teams racing in that leg — 15 minutes apart in the order they placed in the previous leg. In the final leg, the final three teams would be released from the Pit Start simultaneously.
- Megaleg: Teams were informed at the start of the sixth leg that they would encounter a Megaleg. After completing the first set of tasks, they would receive a clue that would order them to continue racing.
- Rules and Penalties: The following rule and penalty were revealed on this season:
- A team that is separated from their camera and sound crew would be held by production at the next Route Marker until their crew arrives or for an appropriate time that production deems is sufficient.
