The Amazing Race 6 is the sixth season of the reality television show, The Amazing Race. It premiered on November 16, 2004 and ended on February 5, 2005 on CBS. The entire season was released on DVD on April 24, 2012.
Synopsis[]
The next 11 teams ready to globe-trot the world are at the starting gate awaiting the official start of the sixth edition of the Emmy Award-winning THE AMAZING RACE .[1]
Production[]
In May 2004, CBS ordered the sixth installment of the show, despite the fact that The Amazing Race 5 had not yet aired. Early renewal was attributed to the success of the changes made in season 5. Applications for The Amazing Race 6 were due on April 13, 2004. Semi-finalist interviews were held in May 2004 and final casting interviews were selected at Los Angeles in June 2004.[2]
Filming began on August 13, 2004 and concluded on September 12, 2004. This season traveled a total of 40,000 miles (64,000 km), across ten countries on four continents.
The show moved to a new timeslot of Tuesdays at 9 pm. CBS also delayed the airing of this season until late in the fall and moved it out of its proposed Saturday time-slot, to create a "cool down" period between seasons, in the hopes that this would help continue the newfound ratings success.[3]
American Airlines and Royal Caribbean were the official sponsors during this season and would provide the prizes awarded to first place teams on certain legs.
This season featured a visit to Sri Lanka, where filming occurred just a few months before the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. The episodes aired after the earthquake had devastated the country and all of the sights and locations the teams had visited. A special message was narrated by host Phil Keoghan at the beginning of the episodes featuring Sri Lanka, dedicating them to the victims and to those helping the recovery.
Twists/Changes[]
- Roadblock Limits: Following criticism of how previous seasons had male-female teams reach the final leg after performing a supermajority of their team's Roadblocks, this season instituted a new rule mandating team members to split their Roadblock performances equally. This season featured 12 Roadblocks, leaving for a maximum Roadblock split of 6-6.
- Intersection: A task in the second leg required the ten remaining teams to divide themselves into two groups of five and work together to complete a Route Info task. Though not yet billed as such, this task provided the basis for the Intersection, which was formally introduced in The Amazing Race 10.
- Yield Reduction: Beginning with this season, Yields are now only available on certain legs of the Race.
- Superleg: This season was intended to have the standard 13 legs. However, after production arrived in Hungary for the sixth leg, they realized that begging was illegal in the country. As the leg was intended to be a Non-Elimination Leg with the last place team subject to the Surrender Money penalty, production realized that this would have virtually made it impossible for that team to accumulate any money. They thus quickly redesigned the leg to be combined with the intended seventh leg, creating the first double-length leg of the series.[4]
- Surrender Money: A team that comes in last place on a Non-Elimination Leg must relinquish all accumulated money in their possession and would not receive any money at the start of the next leg. However, beginning with this season, that team would also not be allowed to attempt to accumulate any money prior to being released from the Pit Start in the following leg.
- Rules and Penalties: The following rules and penalties were revealed on this season:
- A team that takes more than one clue from a Clue Box would incur a 30-minute penalty.
- A team that mistakenly takes another other team's production-provided vehicle would incur a 30-minute penalty, which would be applied at the start of the next leg.
- A team that quits a Roadblock or fails to complete it due to hours of operation would incur a 4-hour penalty.
