The Amazing Race Asia 4 is the fourth season of the reality television show, The Amazing Race Asia. It premiered on September 16, 2010 and ended on December 9, 2010 on AXN Asia.
Production[]
Applications for this season were due on March 31, 2010 after a short extension due to popular demand.[1] Final casting interviews were held in April 2010.[2]
Filming began on June 10, 2010 and concluded on June 30, 2010. This season traveled a total of 38,000 km (24,000 mi), across eight countries on two continents.
This season marked the transition of The Amazing Race Asia from standard-definition to high-definition onto 1080p. This season also saw cosmetic changes to the show's presentation first made to the original US version beginning with The Amazing Race 14 the previous year.[3] This included an updated logo, new on-screen graphics, a new musical score, and the use of split screens.
A week prior to the television broadcast of the season premiere, AXN Asia released the first episode on its official website.[4]
Sony, Caltex, and Hilton Hotels were the official sponsors of the season and would provide the prizes awarded to first place teams on certain legs[4] The show was also supported by Axiata and Tourism Malaysia.[5]
Twists/Changes[]
- Roadblock Limits: This season featured 11 Roadblocks, leaving for a maximum Roadblock split of 6-5.
- Marked for Elimination: A team that came in last place on a Non-Elimination Leg must arrive at the following leg's Pit Stop in first place. Otherwise, they would incur a 30-minute penalty.
- Time Advantage: In the second leg, the team that ate the most chicken balls at a designated Route Info task would earn a 20-minute head start at the next Route Marker, working similarly to the Salvage Pass later seen in other international versions.
- Yield: A Yield was available on the third leg.
- Intersection: In the fifth leg, the remaining eight teams were required to divide themselves into four groups of two, performing all tasks and making decisions together until further notice.
- Free Transport: In the sixth leg, the team that came in first place in the previous leg would be released from the Pit Start last, but would be given a helicopter ride from the Pit Start to Legazpi Airport, instead of having to take public transportation like the other teams.
- U-Turn: A U-Turn was available on the sixth leg.
- No-Rest Leg: Upon checking in at the Pit Stop at the end of the seventh leg, teams were given their next clue by host Allan Wu and immediately began the next leg. The last place team did not face a penalty.
- Rules and Penalties: The following rules and penalties were revealed on this season:
- Beginning with this season, a team that quits a Roadblock and takes the standard 4-hour penalty would now serve their penalty on-site immediately, regardless of whether all teams have already arrived at the Roadblock location or not. The penalty for such an infraction was previously 4 hours assessed at the next Pit Stop, as of The Amazing Race Asia 3.
- Beginning with this season, a team that hitchhikes from one Route Marker to another would now be turned away, required to return to the previous Route Marker, and take a legal form of transportation to the next one. The penalty for such an infraction was previously 1 hour, as of The Amazing Race Asia 1.
