The Pizza de Résistance is the ninth episode of The Amazing Race 37.
Story[]
After learning they are flying to Naples, all five remaining teams book their flights and hotels with the Expedia app. All of them end up on the same flight. Brett & Mark are hoping to win the million dollar prize to start their own family, Alyssa & Josiah plan to try avoiding using the Express Pass this leg, Carson & Jack mention how they had a fight the last time they were in Italy and hope to avoid that this time, and Han & Holden aim to not be the last place team at the end of the day. At the airport, the teams catch up with each other, where Alyssa shows off her foot's burn wounds from the Express Pass challenge before their flight takes off.
Upon arriving, teams are taken by their drivers to Stazione de Montesanto, where they must take the Montesanto Funicular to Castel Sant'Elmo. All teams end up in the same funicular and go up the city. On their way to locate the man dressed up as II Capitano, the teams separate as they get confused over directions. Han & Holden and Jonathan & Ana are the first teams to locate him and receive their clue, which instructs them to take the funicular back down and make their way on foot to the Pulcinella Statue at Via dei Tribunali and rub the nose of the statue with both hands. The remaining teams locate the man after they leave, but the married parents and siblings end up getting on an earlier funicular than them, giving them more of a lead.
On their way down, all the teams receive directions from locals on how to make their way to the statue. Despite their lead in the funicular, the siblings and couple get lost in the streets and confused over where they are at, allowing the three other teams to beat them to the next clue. Brett & Mark and Carson & Jack locate the statue first and find out they have a Detour: Mandolin or Mozzarella. In Mandolin, teams go to Liuteria Anema e Corde, where they must assemble a Neapolitan mandolin, following a finished example as reference. One team member had to attach all of the pieces to the frame, while their partner had to string the mandolin. In Mozzarella, teams go to Palazzo Marigliano, where they must braid six pieces of mozzarella into treccia plaits, each between 250 to 350 grams. Both the Vegas performers and the gamers choose Mozzarella. Alyssa & Josiah arrive shortly afterwards and also choose Mozzarella.
As Jonathan & Ana and Han & Holden continue to run around confused on where they are, the Vegas performers and gamers arrive at Palazzo Marigiliano, where they learn from the chef on how to braid the pieces of mozzarella and begin work on it. After finding which streets they accidentally passed, the last two teams finally make it to the statue. Jonathan & Ana choose to go with Mandolin while Han & Holden go with Mozzarella. Josiah & Alyssa miss what street their Detour task is on and delay their time. Jonathan & Ana arrive at Liuteria Anema e Corde. Jonathan immediately gets to work on the assembly, revealing he's played the guitar for years and felt the task was a natural fit for them. Alyssa & Josiah arrive at the Palazzo and begin their task, while Han & Holden arrive a few minutes later and are disappointed to see the teams they originally had a lead on were now ahead of them.
Jonathan struggles with assembling the tiny pieces while the nurses and siblings have difficulty with the instructions for braiding the cheese. Carson & Jack are the first to have six braids ready to be judged, only to find that all of them were below 250 grams, so they aim to make their next batch larger. Brett & Mark bring their first batch and make four out of six correctly, so they only need to make two more. Han & Holden continue to have problems with the technique. Carson & Jack's second batch of braids ends up being over 350 grams, but they get one correct, giving them a guideline on how to make the rest. Brett & Mark make one out of two braids correct, leaving them with one more. Jonathan helps Ana string the mandolin after assembling it. He appreciated how the task allowed them to do their own things, leading to less arguing between them. For their third attempt, Carson & Jack successfully get all the braids correct and are the first to complete their Detour. They are instructed to head on foot to Vico 2 Montesanto at the Montesanto Quarter.
Brett & Mark complete their last braid and follow suit. Jonathan & Ana are ecstatic to complete assembling and stringing the mandolin on their first try and receive their clue. Thanks to Alyssa's technique, she and Josiah successfully complete the cheese braids on the first attempt, leaving Han & Holden at the last ones on the Detour. Han begins to break down over her perfectionist approach she's had since she was younger, but Holden sternly tells to not overthink it, and the siblings calm down and improve their technique. With the confusing wide streets sending teams in different directions, Jonathan & Ana reach the next clue first, which instructs teams to receive a shopping list and money from a resident from one of the balconies along Vico 2 Montesanto. They must then purchase specified quantities of produce, sausages, and bread, then deliver them using a pail and rope to the resident in exchange for their next clue. After choosing their resident and receiving the instructions and money, the couple excitedly heads out for shopping.
Han & Holden get four out of six braids correct on their first attempt, and are baffled they were better than they thought. With Carson & Jack lost in the city, Brett & Mark arrive at the clue second. Jonathan & Ana get help from the store owners on translating the Italian and get the vegetables from them before heading out to get the sausage and bread. Han & Holden complete their remaining braids and finish the Detour. After being confused for several minutes, Carson & Jack finally locate Vico 2 Montesanto after a resident and Jonathan & Ana's help and are the third team to arrive at the grocery task. Jonathan & Ana get their sausage and continue with their shopping while Brett & Mark get their vegetables. Alyssa & Josiah pass Jonathan & Ana and Brett & Mark getting bread on the way to the clue, while Brett & Mark are upset they can't just pause to get a bite during the challenge. As Alyssa & Josiah arrive at the task, Jonathan & Ana complete their shopping and receive their next clue from the resident, with Brett & Mark finishing shortly after. Teams are instructed to make their way to Piazzetta Olivella, where they must choose a driver and a marked vehicle, then direct their driver to Ristorante da Ettore.
Brett & Mark make it to the marked cars first as Jonathan & Ana get confused over directions. The remaining teams complete shopping and leave just as Han & Holden arrive at the shopping task, though they are thrown off for a few minutes with the Italian instructions. Carson & Jack overtake Jonathan & Ana to take second place in their cars. The first three teams arrive close to the same time at the restaurant. Their Roadblock is to create a Margherita pizza after following close instructions, with the chef giving their next clue if he approves it and the pizza in a box to deliver to the Pit Stop. Ana and Brett volunteer for their teams. Carson is hesitant given he believes he's a terrible cook, but decides to do it to even out his and Jack's Roadblock count.
As Han & Holden receive their sausages, the first three teams begin work on their pizza after watching the demonstration. Ana reveals she worked at Domino's when she was a teen, so she has experience working with pizzas in the past. Alyssa & Josiah arrive at the Roadblock, with Alyssa volunteering for the task. As Han & Holden get the bread and head back to the alley, the four teammates not participating in the Roadblock are served pizza by the restaurant, greatly satisfying Mark as he's been clamoring to eat the whole day. The four contestants struggle with putting the pizza on the paddle until Ana remembers to put some dough on it to help with the transfer. Ana is the first to get her pizza in the oven as Han & Holden complete their grocery task and begin heading towards the restaurant. Ana cooks her first pizza successfully and completes the task. Jonathan & Ana are then instructed to head to the Pit Stop, Castel Nuovo, with their pizza in hand.
As Jonathan & Ana get instructions to the castle, Carson's first pizza attempt is rejected for lacking cheese and olive oil. Brett's first attempt is also successful, and he and Mark begin to head towards the Pit Stop. Alyssa's first pizza is rejected for sticking too hard to the paddle. Carson's second pizza is turned down again as he attempted to load it. Alyssa is hoping not to use the Express Pass unless circumstances are dire. Jonathan & Ana arrive at the Pit Stop first, where they are greeted by Phil and a band playing fitting pizza delivery music. They are ecstatic upon learning they won the leg and receive a trip for two to Mexico City, and feel reinvigorated after finally getting a win after being behind for a few legs. Brett & Mark arrive shortly afterwards to claim second.
Carson's third pizza is rejected for being too small. Alyssa stretches out her dough more to match the appropriate size. Han & Holden make game plans in the taxi on the way to the restaurant and refuse to give up despite being in the back. Alyssa's next pizza is accepted, prompting her and Josiah to head to the Pit Stop. Carson's fourth pizza is rejected for having a square shape, putting more pressure as all but one team are ahead of them. He makes several attempts in shaping the dough that end in failure, with Jack calmly providing support as Carson breaks down, understanding that the task was going to be difficult for him. The atmosphere gets tense as Han & Holden arrive at the restaurant, with Han choosing to do the Roadblock. As Han gets ready, Carson finally bakes a good pizza that the chef believes has the best crust of the day. Carson thanks him as he and Jack prepare to go to the Pit Stop. Han & Holden are still not determined to quit. Alyssa & Josiah arrive third at the Pit Stop, where Josiah and Phil jokingly exchange several pizza puns.
Despite the pressure, Han gets the pizza correct on the first try as Holden cheers her on. The last two teams ask pedestrians for directions to the castle. Though they had some confusion getting to the top, Carson & Jack arrive at the Pit Stop in fourth place and joyfully dance on their way to their hotel rooms.
Han & Holden are the last to arrive to the Pit Stop, but to their relief, Phil tells them that they are still competing as it is a non-elimination leg, which comes as a surprise given how long it's been in the show since the last one. The siblings happily dance with Phil as they vow to let their second chance not go to waste.
