The Adventure Begins
The race began nearly 8000 miles away in New York City. Eleven Teams of two were led into the heart of Central Park. From there, the Teams had no idea where they would be going or what adventures they would encounter. All they had was a limited amount of cash, to be used for all expenses on the first leg of the race, aside from airfare, the only expense they need not worry about. The key to their next destination lay sealed within a yellow envelope waiting for them atop a single set of stairs in the park. Lenny Hudson, partnered with his girlfriend, Karyn Jefferson, described the start as "phenomenal. It was anticipation, it was nervousness, it was excitement--I was scared. It was all of those emotions rolled into one."
Host Phil Keoghan signaled the start of the race. The eleven Teams rushed up the concrete steps and ripped open the race envelope. Frank & Margarita Mesa, separated parents from New York looking at this adventure as an opportunity to reconcile, were the first to read the instructions. They were surprised and excited to discover their next destination was Johannesburg, South Africa. The Teams then hurried out of the park and hailed taxis or hopped on subways to JFK Airport.
Route Markers
The race begins at Bethesda Terrace, Central Park, New York City, New York, United States.
Teams must fly to Johannesburg South Africa. They may only fly in one of the three approved flights, arranged according to order of arrival to Johannesburg: South African Airways, a direct flight but can only carry six teams; Swiss Air, a connecting flight from to Zurich, Switzerland, could carry two teams; or Alitalia, a connection to Milan, Italy, which could carry four teams.
From Johannesburg, teams will to proceed to Lanseria Airport and sign up for a chartered flight to Livingstone, Zambia.
Once in Zambia, they would have to take a provided car to the "Knife's Edge" in Victoria Falls. Teams may choose to drive themselves to the Knife's Edge, or hire a driver. However if they choose the latter, the driver may not give directions.
Teams will have to proceed to Batoka Gorge. The envelope where this clue comes from also contains instructions for the Fast Forward.
Teams are to hike down a steep canyon to the Boiling Pot on the Zambezi River and claim their Fast Forward pass there. Rob & Brennan is successful in finding the Fast Forward.
Choice A: Air
Teams will be riding a zipline across the gorge and then bungee jump 54 meters down.
All of the teams choose this option.
Choice B: Land
Teams will have to hike down the rim of the gorge to receive their next clue.
Teams must drive themselves to Songwe Village for their next clue.
At Songwe Village, one team member must cook a whole ostrich egg for the whole team to eat. Once finished, they may head to the Pit Stop located somewhere within the village.
In the DVD release, neither Pat & Brenda and Matt & Ana's Roadblocks performances are shown.Leaderboard
