There's No Addresses in the Jungle is the fourth episode of The Amazing Race 37.
Story[]
Early in the morning at Utsubo Park, Scott & Lori receive the first clue of the day. Teams must fly to Bali, Indonesia, where they would choose a driver and a marked vehicle, which would serve as their transportation for the leg, and go to Pura Puseh Bali Aga Bayad. There's also another reminder this leg will feature a new twist for the show: The Driver's Seat, where the first team that arrives to the task determines how it will go for the other teams.
The parents of eight as well as Carson & Jack go to GS Travel to book their tickets for the earliest flight, 7:15 A.M. Jonathan & Ana get their tickets shortly afterwards, and the two feel comfortable going into the leg with the Express Pass. The two top teams discuss their relationship with Jonathan & Ana and how they'd use the Driver's Seat, with Scott & Lori saying one of them should make it first because they know if anyone else makes it the top three teams would be targeted.
Melinda & Erika, Brett & Mark, and Pops & Jeff get their tickets to the same flight from GS Travel at the same time. Alyssa & Josiah, Nick & Mike, and Han & Holden are also able to get on the earlier flight, providing some relief for the teams in the back half. Bernie & Carrigain, starting hours behind most of the other teams in last, are the only ones not able to make the first flight, instead settling for one that leaves at 10:55 A.M. The flight for the first ten teams leave, while Bernie & Carrigain are still hopeful to catch up with them despite the time difference.
The first flight arrives in Bali at 4:40 P.M., and all the teams rush out to get a driver to take them to Pura Puseh Bali Aga Bayad. Bernie & Carrigan's flight arrives over four hours later. Jonathan & Ana arrive at the destination first, where they find numbered slots and discover they won't receive their clue until the next morning. Nick & Mike get second, Scott & Lori get third, Han & Holden get fourth, Alyssa & Josiah get fifth, Pops & Jeff get sixth, Brett & Mark get seventh, Melinda & Erika get eighth, and Carson & Jack get ninth for having a slow taxi driver, but are confident they'll catch up back to the front. Bernie & Carrigain arrive hours later and grab the tenth slot.
All teams come back the next morning where they are given their next clue from two ATV drivers. The Route Info clue reveals that the teams will ride an ATV along a marked course through the jungle and find their next clue behind a waterfall. They will leave by order of the numbered slots they picked. After the teams put on their helmets and pick their ATVs, Jonathan & Ana are the first to leave. Jonathan initially has some trouble before Erika points out his parking brake is on. As they enter the jungle, Nick is the next to drive his team. The teams have fun taking their ATVs into the jungle and enjoying the scenery. Scott is the next to drive out, with Holden following him soon after. Josiah is the next to go and jokes about how the jungle doesn't have any addresses. He discusses how he grew up in Guanaja and is actually used to getting through the jungle on an ATV.
Jeff is the next to go, with Pops being on the more cautionary side and telling him to slow down. Jonathan & Ana eventually end up in a tight cave, and Jonathan comments how moments like these on the race allow him to play out his Indiana Jones fantasies. They find the waterfall and grab the clue from it. Brett & Mark take off and appreciate the sites as Nick & Mike get their clue. Melinda & Erika are the next to leave, commenting on how shocked they are they're getting along so well on the race. As Scott & Lori grab their clue, Carson takes off and compare driving an ATV in the jungle to living out their Mario Kart and other nerd fantasies. Han grabs their clue as Bernie unleashes her inner adrenaline junkie on the last ATV. Alyssa & Josiah have so much fun at the waterfall they nearly forget their clue.
Jonathan & Ana return back to the site and uncover their clue. Teams must direct their drivers to the Gabah Ayu Rice Fields in Tampaksiring, where the Driver's Seat will be featured. One by one, the remaining teams grab their clues and return to their taxis. Jonathan & Ana arrive at the rice fields and come across a Roadblock, where one team member must use traditional methods to thresh a designated amount of rice by manually threshing the rice against a piece of wood, sifting the rice, and then loading it into a sack. Once they have threshed the designated amount of rice, they would receive their next clue.
Additionally, this task also features the Driver's Seat, where one team will determine which of the rest will have to thresh 15, 20, or 25 pounds of rice. After Ana volunteers to do it, she and Jonathan come across the Driver's Seat in the fields. To improve their lead, they decide to give the first three teams behind them: Nick & Mike, Scott & Lori and Alyssa & Josiah, the maximum amount. They give themselves and Melinda & Erika, one of the weaker teams, 15 pounds, and they distribute 20 pounds to Han & Holden, Brett & Mark, and Carson & Jack. They give the final two 25 pounds to Pops & Jeff and Bernie & Carrigain. After Ana watches the process and believes it will take to long, the couple decide to use their Express Pass to bypass it. The next clue instructs teams to head to Penglipuran Village.
Shortly after they leave, Scott & Lori and Nick & Mike arrive at the Roadblock, where Lori and Nick volunteer to do it. Carson & Jack's taxi driver Abdul redeems himself from the previous night by speeding past the other teams and helping the gamers make up ground. Scott & Lori, believing they had a better relationship with Jonathan & Ana, are angered that they got assigned the highest amount. Meanwhile, Brett & Mark's taxi driver gets lost. After Mark checks the driver's phone, he discovers the driver put in the wrong address and that they are over 40 minutes away from their next clue, dropping them to last place. The next four teams arrive at the Roadblock, with Alyssa, Jack, Han, and Jeff volunteering. Alyssa isn't surprised about getting the largest amount, while Jack and Han are thankful they got 20. Jeff wasn't discouraged over getting 25 pounds and got started with the others.
The team members not doing the Roadblock learn from Scott that Jonathan & Ana used the Express Pass for the task, and they determine they gave the lightest slot to themselves to avoid giving more than one to the other teams. On the way to the next ask, Ana says she likely would've given another team the lightest amount if they knew they were going to use their Express Pass, and hope they didn't end up wasting it. While rice threshing, Han relays that their parents came from a rice-farming family before moving to America, and the siblings hope to make them proud. Lori and Nick test their bags and find they are underweight. Melinda & Erika arrive next, with Melinda choosing to take her first Roadblock on. As Scott & Lori discuss taking on physically daunting challenges like these at nearly 50 years old, Erika mentions how she and the other teams feel they're trying to downplay their speed given they've been consistently in the top for the last few legs.
Despite having one of the larger amounts, Lori is able to complete the task first and get their clue, while Nick is still underweight. Bernie & Carrigain arrive next, with Carrigain going for the task. They aren't happy to see they got the highest amount and don't know if they got it for being behind in the last few legs or if they're because of a threat, but know the couple have a big target on their back now. Lori is still upset about getting the highest amount despite dominating the task. Jonathan & Ana arrive at Penglipuran Village, where they come across a Detour: Penjor or Pajegan. In Penjor, teams must decorate a Balinese Hindu symbol of prosperity known as a penjor, a long bamboo pole decorated with leaves, flowers, and offerings. Once the judge has approved of their work, they must carry their penjor to a designated stand along the main street of the village. In Pajegan, teams must create two pajegan, a Balinese Hindu fruit offering, using fruits they purchased from the village market. Once they have properly created two pajegan, they must balance it on their heads and bring it to a nearby temple.
Jonathan & Ana choose Penjor. After looking at the example, the two begin assembling it, but Jonathan is forced to pause and go to the bathroom for a couple of minutes before returning after complaining about it during assembly. Scott & Lori arrive soon after and also choose Penjor. Jonathan & Ana, knowing how strong of a team Scott & Lori are, worry that they blew the Express Pass. The older couple also ignore their greeting, still upset over the Driver's Seat. Nick is the next to complete the Roadblock, and mentions he got rice in his eyes on the way out. As Han completes her bag, Brett & Mark are the last ones to arrive to the fields, with Mark agreeing to do the threshing. Alyssa gets hers done next, and she and Mark nearly run into each other and trip as she and Josiah leave. Mark mentions how he and Brett have been killing the challenges, but the other teams haven't noticed since other circumstances put them in the back, giving them an advantage with how they're viewed.
Jack is the next to complete the rice challenge. The two sibling teams arrive at the Detour at the same time, and both agree to try Pajegan and go together to the workstations. They come up with a story to memorize all the fruits needed for the pajegan. Alyssa & Josiah decide to do Penjor, but miss the sign directing them where they need to go. Carson accidentally drops his clue before opening it as he and Jack decide to do Penjor, with Alyssa & Josiah running back to correct their mistake. As the two younger teams make it to their stations, Scott & Lori decide to make some adjustments to theirs. Mark loses his shoe in the mud while measuring his rice bag. Melinda is the next to complete her rice bag, with Jeff following shortly after. Mark manages to finish his station a few minutes later, leaving Bernie & Carrigain as the last team at the Roadblock. Despite the circumstances, Carrigain's able to complete her load some time later and receive their clue.
Scott & Lori begin to argue loudly over the arrangement of the penjor, with Alyssa & Jack joking on their squabble. Jonathan & Ana's first penjor attempt is rejected for not having one of the larger decorations attached to the base. After correcting it, their second attempt is approved. After putting on the ceremonials sarong, they bring the penjor to the village to be displayed. The other teams aren't happy they completed theirs, but accept it and decide to move on. Once they put it in the proper stand, they receive their last clue: To race to the Pit Stop in Pura Dalem Pelapuan. Meanwhile the two sibling teams have difficulty navigating the village market and finding their items. Melinda & Erika arrive and choose Penjor, where they learn from Alyssa & Josiah its pretty doable. Brett & Mark and Pops & Jeff arrive next, with both teams also choosing Penjor. Scott & Lori are the next to get their penjor approved, and they greet and fist bump the local village children as they make their way to the stand.
Bernie & Carrigain arrive and choose Penjor. Not noticing the signs pointing them to the task, they ask some villagers for directions and go the wrong way. Carson & Jack get their penjor approved as Scott & Lori put theirs in the stand. As Carson & Jack carry theirs to the stand, they run into Bernie & Carrigain, who ask for directions. While the gamers do tell them to head further back to find it, the two friends turn early instead and are still unable to find the workstations. The gamers receive their clue and head to the Pit Stop. Meanwhile, the sibling teams finally locate the markets they need for their fruits and grab what they need.
Jonathan & Ana arrive at the Pit Stop and are greeted by Phil and a villager. For winning the leg, they win a trip for two to Dubrovnik, Croatia and Kotor, Montenegro. The two compliment each other on their teamwork for helping them succeed in most of the legs. While most of the teams are stressed trying to assemble the penjor, Brett & Mark have a calmer approach over it. The two sibling teams attempt to assemble their pajegan, with Nick & Mike getting theirs approved first. As they learn how to carry it, Han & Holden's first attempt is rejected for having the flowers in the wrong position. As the brothers begin to carry theirs, they are unsure of where to go and can't check the clue, so they decide to go in the opposite direction. After fixing their flowers, Han & Holden's pajegan are approved.
Carson & Jack arrive at the Pit Stop in second, with Scott & Lori joining them in third seconds behind them. Jack & Lori agree that Jonathan & Ana made the wrong moves with the Driver's Seat and using the Express Pass too soon, especially if there's a U-Turn coming up. Bernie & Carrigain continue to be lost in the village. Carrigain finds a map and points out where they may need to go, but Bernie doesn't trust it. They get into an argument as Carrigain believes Bernie doesn't trust her enough to go with her suggestions or decisions. The friends finally make it back to the cluebox and find the direction signs they overlooked, taking them to where they needed to be. As the two girls make their way to their station, Alyssa & Josiah have their penjor approved.
Nick & Mike eventually find the table to deliver their pajegan, but Nick's falls apart as he attempts to give it to the lady there, forcing the brothers to reassemble it. This gives Han & Holden enough time to catch up and deliver both offerings without any accidents. Both sibling teams get the clue and make their way to the Pit Stop. Brett & Mark, Pops & Jeff, and Melinda & Erika get their penjors approved nearly at the same time, leaving Bernie & Carrigain as the only team at the Detour task. The two sibling teams ask for directions to Pura Dalem Pelapuan and run to where the locals point them to. Alyssa & Josiah and Brett & Mark decide to follow them after planting their penjors. As the four teams scramble around, Melinda & Erika get directions from a local's phone that points them straight behind the cluebox the other teams didn't follow. After fixing their penjor, Pops & Jeff get their last clue.
The four teams end up in the village market and run in a circle to end up where they started. Melinda questions if they should have followed the other teams, but Erika believes they should follow the local's instructions and go down straight. Bernie & Carrigain complete their detour and prepare to go to the Pit Stop. After the long walk, Melinda & Erika find Phil and make it to the Pit Stop in fourth, and are immediately followed by Alyssa & Josiah, Han & Holden, Brett & Mark, Nick & Mike, and Pops & Jeff rounding out spots five through nine. Phil then discusses with the five teams on what they think of Jonathan & Ana. Alyssa believes they already had a target on their back for racing well the first few legs, and now have a large one because of the Driver's Seat. Melinda and Alyssa also comment on Scott & Lori downplaying their overall speed from their age when they've also performed well and glad the other teams can see through them.
After the five teams leave, Bernie & Carrigain are the last team to arrive at the Pit Stop and are eliminated from the race. Bernie praises Carrigain for being so patient with her in the race and claims if anyone else ran with her they would've hated her guts. Carrigain is grateful she got to compete with Bernie on the race, saying they come from the same place and everything they did on the race felt magical.
