Australian Olympic swimming legend and king of the pool, Ian 'Thorpie' Thorpe, and his long-time friend Christian Miranda, are hoping to go far on the Race. Having known each other for many years, they know how to bring out the best in each other, and plan to use this experience and their competitive nature to secure the win for their charity.
One of Australia's greatest Olympians, the 'Thorpedo's' accomplishments are nothing short of amazing.
Having dominated the swimming pool, smashing records, collecting world titles and notching up an impressive medal tally, Thorpie's legacy has inspired swimmers across the globe. His remarkable five Olympic Gold medal record was only broken this year after 20 years.
During his swimming career, Thorpie won nine Olympic medals, 11 World Championship titles 10 Commonwealth Games medals, nine Pan Pacific Games titles and broke 22 World Records.
Thorpie was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2008 as an Athlete Member and elevated to Legend of Australian Sport in 2021 for his contribution to swimming.
One of the most successful sportspeople Australia has ever produced, Thorpie's accolades out of the pool are just as impressive as those in it.
He was awarded an AM for his significant service to youth and Indigenous education, and swimming, was named Young Australian of the Year in 2000 and received the Human Rights Medal in 2012 for his work fighting for better services for Indigenous children in remote communities.
Thorpie was the winner of the Australian Sports Medal and four-time World Swimmer of the Year. He has Honorary Doctorates from the Western Sydney University and Macquarie University.
Having retired from competitive swimming, Thorpie has hosted one the world's largest Olympic Games broadcasts for Star Sports India at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, provided his expert commentary for Seven Network at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Australian Swim Trials, FINA World Championships, and 2020 Tokyo Olympics and to the Nine Network at the recent Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Thorpie also hosted the critically acclaimed ABC documentary series Bullied which resulted in the ABC's biggest ever social media event.
He was an Ambassador for Australian Marriage Equality, Invictus Games Sydney and AIME, is a Patron and Board Member for frontline youth mental health service, ReachOut and has advisory roles with Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and STUFF.
Accustomed to breaking world records and winning gold in races, Thorpie and best mate Christian, have been friends since they were kids, having met through swimming, and the two are ready to take on a different type of race.
Christian is a personal trainer and the proud owner of ONE Gyms and Journey Retreats. Spending most of his younger years focusing on competitive swimming, until a serious back injury ended his swimming ambitions.
Identifying what it is that he offers the most value toward other people, Christian went on to build communities through his gyms and retreats around the world that positively impact the people around him.
Christian believes his biggest advantage in the Race will be his physical capacity along with being a good communicator and being able to handle pressure.
The team, having previously enjoyed travelling together, will bring loyalty, teamwork and a calm, measured approach to each challenge. They are looking forward to having fun and experiencing new things together.
