The U-Turn allows any one team to force another team to complete both of the Detour tasks in a leg. It was introduced in The Amazing Race 12.

Usage

After completing a chosen Detour option or just before receiving a Detour clue, a team may use the U-Turn to force another team to also complete the other Detour option that they did not originally choose. Similarly to a Yield, the team placing the U-Turn places a photo of the team they are penalizing, along with their own "Courtesy Of" photo, on the U-Turn marker stand. Prior to U.S. version The Amazing Race 17, the U-Turn slot is only available for one individual team to U-Turn one other team. From The Amazing Race 19 to The Amazing Race 22, electronic tablets were used in place of physical photos, removing the need for teams to hold their "Courtesy Of" photos. The usage of the photos returned in The Amazing Race 23, but teams no longer need to hold their "Courtesy Of" photos along the Race as these are now placed at the U-Turn board.

Like the Yield, if the team has lost their "Courtesy Of" photo, they will be unable to use their U-Turn power for the remainder of the Race. This was seen in The Amazing Race Asia 3 in Leg 9, after Ida & Tania decided to U-Turn Geoff & Tisha, only to realize that they did not have their "Courtesy Of" photo with them.

Originally, the U-Turn board was placed after the Detour point. The Amazing Race 27 was the first time a U-Turn board was placed before a Detour decision point, with The Amazing Race 29 and The Amazing Race 30 using this format. The Amazing Race Canada: Heroes Edition later adopted this change as well. Beginning with The Amazing Race 31, the U-Turn board may now variably be placed either before or after the Detour.

Starting with The Amazing Race 28, the U-Turn board is designed after the locale.

It is possible for a team to U-Turn another team that has already passed the U-Turn, nullifying its effects. Depending on the version, a team can only use their U-Turn power once per Race, and only one team may be affected by the same U-Turn during a leg. In The Amazing Race Canada and in The Amazing Race 29 of the United States version, teams are allowed to use the U-Turn more than once. Teams are warned of an upcoming U-Turn on the Route Marker or after the Detour clue. The Amazing Race 15 was the first and only season since its inception not to air a U-Turn, while The Amazing Race 33 was the first season not to feature a U-Turn (that season was restarted due to lack of timing because COVID-19 pandemic affected its original production run). The U-Turn made a return in The Amazing Race 35.

If the Fast Forward and U-Turn appear in the same leg or if there will be Double U-Turn, that leg will have a U-Turn warning in the first clue they receive (usually at the Pit Stop of the previous leg, or at the virtual Pit Stop).

U-Turn Types

Blind/Anonymous U-Turn

Starting in The Amazing Race 14, teams were met with a variation of the U-Turn called a "Blind U-Turn" ("Anonymous U-Turn" in the Australian version and The Amazing Race (Latin America)). If teams use a Blind U-Turn, they do not have to publicly reveal themselves as the perpetrators with their "Courtesy Of" photo.

Double U-Turn

The Double U-Turn was introduced in the ninth leg of The Amazing Race 17. This addition allowed two individual teams to each U-Turn one other team and is currently the main U-turn used in the U.S. after its introduction. The Amazing Race 3 (Latin America) was the first season in all the franchise to air a Double U-Turn that no teams used.

Blind Double U-Turn

During The Amazing Race 21, a hybrid of the Blind and Double U-Turns called the Blind Double U-Turn was introduced. It has the effects of both those U-Turns: two different teams each could U-Turn one other team, just like the Double U-Turn, but the identities of those who used it would be kept secret just like the Blind U-Turn.

Penalty

In The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business, the last team to complete the Starting Line Task, Amanda & Kris, was automatically penalized with a U-Turn for the first Detour they encountered.

In The Amazing Race 4 (Latin America), the last team to complete the Starting Line Task, Billy & Gean, was automatically penalized with a U-Turn for the first Detour they encountered.

Must-Vote U-Turn

HaMerotz LaMillion 2 has a different format of the U-Turn, where at the start of the Leg, each team votes for who should receive the U-Turn. The team with the most votes is forced to complete both of the Detour tasks upon arriving at the Detour. If multiple teams have the most votes, then all tied teams are U-Turned.

The voting format was later used in all of the seasons of the Chinese version, in The Amazing Race Australia 2, and The Amazing Race Philippines 1.

It was eventually used in the US version in The Amazing Race 31, being simply called a U-Turn Vote and has been used with both the Double and Blind variants. In the first appearance of the Double U-Turn Vote, voting was done verbally in front of other teams in an order selected by random draw, allowing for teams who voted later to make their decision based on how other teams voted. However, in The Amazing Race 37, all teams voted in private before being required to publicly reveal their vote; teams who revealed their vote later were not allowed to change their vote based on the ongoing vote tally. In The Amazing Race 35, voting was done anonymously.

Must-Vote Double U-Turn

HaMerotz LaMillion 3 introduced a hybrid of the Double U-Turn and Must-Vote U-Turn. Similar to a Must-Vote U-Turn, all teams vote for a team to be U-Turned. But in addition, the U-Turned team gets to exclusively use another U-Turn against another team.
