The race begins at Washington Square Park in New York City, New York, United States.
Teams must fly to Reykjavík, Iceland. The first flight could carry seven teams and is scheduled to arrive 30 minutes ahead of the second, which would carry the remaining four teams.[2] Upon arrival, teams must drive themselves to the Geitárgljúfur waterfall, where they would find their next clue.
One member must Tyrolean traverse over the Geitár river canyon to retrieve a flag of Iceland (
) suspended from the line. Once they have retrieved the flag, their partner must pull them back to the start, after which then they can exchange their flag for their next clue. Only two stations are available at a time.
Teams must drive themselves to Esjumelur, where they would find their next clue.
"Do I have to spell it out?"
The team member assigned to perform this Roadblock must ride along in an off-road buggy along the foothills of Mount Esja, and spot 11 Icelandic letters, without taking any notes. They must then arrange tiles with those letters to spell out the name of their next destination, "Ingólfstorg", with racers being left to figure out that the numbers accompanying the letters denoted its order in the word. Once they have correctly spelled out the word, they would receive their next clue.
The Roadblock performers per team are underlined:
Teams must drive themselves to Ingólfstorg, parking their cars at a marked parking area. They must then find Katrín Davíðsdóttir in a strongman expo, who would ask them two questions pertaining to two national tonics:
